Currently have two offers, unsure of which one to pick. Reddit is for a mid-level SWE position, whereas Meta is for a mid-level production engineer. Reddit TC is 200k, not including equity (which means nothing since they're private). Meta TC is ~272k, including equity. Reddit is fully-remote, but Meta is 3 days a week in the office. Thoughts?
Seems a bit low for meta E4, no? Thought 300 was standard for e4
Both kind of shitholes. I’d do Reddit full remote though
Why one shithole over the other? (serious question btw)
Essentially: if it’s going to suck, make it suck less. Most people on here say WFH/remote is the greatest option so optimize for that (it could be worth serious $$$ to not commute every week).
What's a production engineer and how's it different from SWE ?, fully remote sounds enticing, not sure what Reddits work environment is like, but you already know what Meta's like so you can use that to inform your decision as well
PE is infrastructure. Which could be pure DevOps/SRE or pure SWE for infrastructure - but most likely some mixture in between.
Nah, they are just working on internal shit.
When you refer to startup equity as "it means nothing", it's pretty obvious you should not work at a startup.
Fair point. My previous gig was a much smaller seed-stage startup that didn't work out, so I'm biased against equity packages from private companies.
I didn't mean to be dismissive right away either. I should clarify and say that bonuses, refreshers, most raises beyond cost of living adjustments will most likely be Reddit stock. If you don't believe in Reddit's future, you will lose motivation and just generally be pissed 3 years down the line thinking about the refreshers/Meta's stock appreciation you could have got.
Remote
How is this even a question? Reddit all day. Meta is a worse position (career prospects for PE are worse than SWE, no matter how BS that is in reality), forces you to go to an office no one wants to be in (unless you’re in their good NY office), and is a misery factory that has an explicit quota to give people a bad rating and force them out (worst parts of Amazon culture seeping in).
Since it’s a boomerang offer, you already know culture at Meta. So what don’t you try something new?
