What is the best way to protect yourself if your data was stolen in the Equifax cyber security incident? You can check if you have been affected here: https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com
Lock your credit reports.
The checking is bs. Just keep an eye on you credit report and sign up for some credit alert services ( e.g. credit karma, nerd wallet, discover bank). And check you annual credit report 3 times a year from all three credit bureau.
I used SSN=123456 and Smith to check and it told me it was affected. This website is fishy.
Really? No way. It is the official site provided by Equifax.
I heard this also so I made one up and it told me I was not affected. But I had just submitted my real name with the same IP address so there could be some intelligence to it.
