I joined Amazon 6 months back as a L5 Pgm Manager but want to break into Product Manager - Tech in the longer run. I can see two options from where I stand today 1. Try for L5 Product Manager within my team / a different team and then work for the Tech component 2. Pretty close for L6 Pgm Manager (potentially Q1 2023) and then transition to a Product Role Which option would be better in terms of career growth / compensation increase Current TC -$160K#tech #productmanager #productmanagement #programmanager
Do you have an engineering background?
No I don’t have engineering background, but do have analytics and ML understanding and hands on experience (3-4 years) in the past - if that helps
Promos are determined by body of work. If you move to another family now, your body of work resets. So it'll take longer to promo. So for me, promo first makes sense
Thanks! Yes makes sense and is something I am definitely factoring
Promos are always difficult, so if you’re close to promo get that and then try lateral move. Though lateral move at L6 will be slightly tougher than at L5
Get the L6 and stay close to the tech artifacts and engineers/scientists on your team. Move to PM after your promo or assess if your team will build out the vertical. In all products you support, think about your tech assessment and make sure you’re knowledgeable about the design aspects.
Thanks so much.. this is super helpful Yes I work pretty closely with the science and engineering team so hopefully having their buy in will also be helpful
