I have a buddy who was reached out to on LinkedIn by a recruiter, during the initial phone screening he was asked a hard leetcode question despite him having ~3 years and was denied. He has more experience and is a better engineer than me. I just went through the L5 loop and accepted the offer and have been working at Amazon for about 2 months now. During a one on one with my manager he asked if I had anyone to refer and if my buddy went through the same loop as me then I'm sure he'd get it. He's worried about trying to go for it so soon after recently being denied from the other position. The position he went to was on the retail side and I'm on the AWS side. Is there any rules for interviewing so soon after a rejection? Is there a reason he shouldn't go for a referral from me? Any other thoughts? TC: 300k YOE: 3.5
Hiring managers have a lot of flexibility in this since he just failed a phone screen and didn’t make it to an onsite. While the general rule of thumb is to wait 6 months but if your manager really wants to interview him again, I have seen that happen too
To have a shorter recycle - you need a BR approval. Not sure how it works with Phone Screen, maybe just HM approval
Use a different email
Some approvals might be needed, but HM can make it happen at times. Also, we all know that after a certain level of preparation, interviewing is mostly luck and numbers game. So we should just keep improving ourselves and need to keep trying.
Did he actually apply or get turned away before applying? If the latter, he can apply no problem. If the former, he was presumably recycled and needs to wait 6 months.
