I had on site yesterday with Amazon and today recruiter called to break the news that offer is coming next week at L5 level. This is for network engineering. I've 12 years experience and interview was good as well. What should be I expecting in terms of TC and also should I ask for L6 or is it mostly a done deal?
2 technical, 1 design and 2 LP interviews. It went well for me. Coding they grill deeply, python or perl. Not just basics but want to know how to use it for networks. BGP OSPF and tcp/layer 2
What is an LP interview?
Leadership principles
Level is mostly a done deal. They will not uplevel without a new interview. They will not re-interview unless you were clearly so good in the interview that it was apparent to all involved that you should have been an L6.
Thanks. This helps
Was this swe or sdm ?
Also how was the system design question?
It sounds like an NDE. Network development engineer.
Any tips for system design for sdm?
Design a worldwide <insert large scale cloud service here>. Consider scaling, caching, sharding, hashing, failover, performance/costs/latency....
Congrats! Well done!
12 yrs of experience?? You'll see people with 1-2 yrs of experience with masters at the same level. If you are ok with that then... your choice. Promo is very hard to earn especially to L6. Maybe 2-3 yrs minimum. I took the downleveled position, and now I'm at a different company after 10 months at Amazon lol
Also the Amazonians congratulating here are all trolls. They know L5 with 12 yrs of experience will have a shit time
I joined with about the same number of years of experience at L5 and it’s been ok. L5 is an extremely wide band - almost one of the widest - but is a terminal senior IC role. L6 gets interesting because you are mostly not an IC anymore and the bar is quite high. Promo to L6 is difficult but not impossible: I know 5-6 who were promoted in the past 1-2 years but it takes 1-2 years to prove yourself and write the document.
