Hiring is SO expensive, it’s one thing to decide to reduce investment in unprofitable business segments and cut marketing budgets, but assuming a 50% pass rate at a company like Amazon (which is high, when I was interviewing there it was closer to 10% we gave offers to) and on average a 10 hour investment per candidate ( 5 rounds + hour pre/debrief w/ 5 ppl) you’re looking at 20 hour investment per hire or 1 man year of effort (assuming 2000 hours worked per year which is drastically low at Amazon but I digress) to hire 100 people. For every 1000 people Amazon lays off they flush, conservatively, a decade of work down the toilet.
In a company of hundreds of thousands employee, a decade of work of a single person is insignificant if look in the perspective…

Joining Amazon has always been like this, nothing new here, PIP culture means you always need to worry. That's how the system keeps working according to Amazon's HR head team.
@whyguy not exactly, if everyone is basically a superstar at their job on your team then pretty much anyone on the team will still be PIPed because of the quotas. Thats usually why hire to fire exists (its not an Amazon created thing, its a manager created thing lol)

Andy Jassy has internally sent a note that communication related to layoffs in resepctive orgs will be communicated in Jan 2023. Till that point, nobody knows who will be in the soup.
To add to that, he also said that it will only be communicated via Blind masked as hundreds of daily speculative posts.
