This probably applies to others who have "done well" in their careers, but just sharing my story which happens to take place at @google. When I first started working, I had a lot of passion for my career. I know saying that seems like I drank the koolaid, but it's true and I got lucky with promotions/projects/visibility. I'm now Level 6 and am an IC in the consistently "Exceeds+" range. If Wealthfront can be trusted, I could retire early "very comfortably" in 15 years. I'm 30 now. Home will be paid off by then too. Even before Covid 19, my mood and enthusiasm for work has started changing. Work is still really easy to be honest, and I have a good sense for how to position my impact in the smart way (relatively free of drama or politics) because I know how Google works and my tenure/seniority/mentoring work. I'm not in a rush to get to Level 7. Has anyone gone through this before? Do I just keep phoning it in? Or is this something I should take time off for? (Taking time off comes with tradeoffs.) Wife also says she supports me with whatever I decide. She's at another FANG company also doing well. #workingparent
Time off alone won't solve what's ailing you. You say your 30 but you may not realize that you've moved into what's called another career lifespan. You may want to spend time considering what this means for you and then how you want to respond. Long story short: its not abnormal for your priorities to shift at this point and you need something a bit different. That and we've had this whole covid thing that natural will force us into thinking differently about life and what we want.
What do you want to do? Maybe it’s time for a different challenge? Maybe you need more fulfillment outside of work?
I am in similar situation. Left my previous company due to mental burn out, but here also, I am not performing at my level because the work is shit, people are little less collaborative, manager is a liar. Don't know what to do. May be just sail along.
I feel like I am in a similar situation. I jumped my current job into another one that is more exploratory. I do like the technology and the pay and wlb is awesome. But I don't feel connected to my work anymore as I don't see any practical impact? Should I keep going? Or switch to a more meaningful role?
I'm still trying to get into FANG, not qualified to give you any advice lol.
I think it's time to get some babies and you'll have a different perspective
L6 IC (or small team lead, no managing) and coast is my career goal. I thought I was gonna do that at 5 but coasting there felt like too little work, got bored. From what I read I think 6 is going to be the perfect workload for career maintenance
If you think the market will shoot up hr next 15 years just like it has the past 15, you are a fool. take time off - you'd be surprised how hard it is to find a high paying job in a downturn not propped up by a lot of money printing
Take time off to find another job
Sounds like a burn out. Take some time off.
