Apple compensation negotiation

Got a job as a senior swe. How to approach compensation negotiation? Recruiter is asking for my expectations. #salarynegotiation #salary #apple

Apple <~##}}_\ Jan 24, 2020

Don’t give numbers first. Ask for their numbers. If you don’t know how to control the conversation to make that happen, then give a number you will accept and be happy with. Do not give a range, it’s not logical to expect anyone to pay you at the upper end of your stated range. Imagine if they offered you a range, would you want the low end of it? If you’re unhappy with the offer, Ask if there is room for negotiation. Be prepared with an answer to the same question when it’s asked. Don’t end the call with “sounds great! where do I sign?”, end it with “thanks for calling, I love the company and team and your mission and vision and strategy and culture and benefits and corporate social responsibility and technology. I’ll think about these numbers and get back to you”

Are numbers at levels.fyi good to start with?

Apple <~##}}_\ Jan 24, 2020

Yes. But remember it’s only downhill from the first number you blurt out.

Tangential question, but how much did you receive as a per diem reimbursement if traveling across the country?

Expedia Group nvfigvjfc OP Jan 24, 2020

100 for the interview day and travel days were prorated

Google daplaya Jan 24, 2020

Wait, what is this? Apple gives $100 per day for your expenses? Or is this in addition to hotel + food + transport?

I went through something similar for Apple. The recruiter tried hard to push me to say my expectations, but I always countered her by saying, please provide me with the best offer you could to start the negotiation with. I basically let her know that there will be two parts, first is you giving me a fair offer, second there will be a negotiation phase for sure. I ended up rejecting the offer for other reasons that has nothing to do with the offered numbers.

Do you think that this strategy can ever backfire? Specifically, it’s unlikely that they’ll start with the top offer as they want to leave some room for negotiation. If they’re starting with their middle offer, then you might be anchoring the entire negotiation lower than where you would have wanted. Thoughts?

The recruiter will most likely come back with a fair offer that is targeted at the middle range or just a bit above it, and that's a fine start, you have just avoided a completely low ball offer, now the negotiation starts, the goal would be to get to 90% of the absolute max of the job grade. No recruiter is going to come out with the highest number right out the door and that is expected, part of their jobs is to get you to sign with the lowest possible dollars. I don't see anything backfiring unless you are rude with your request. The point is, recruiters cannot risk losing a canadite that just passed the interview process. so their tactics of scaring you are only mind games they were trained on.

I found this article really helpful when negotiating my last offer. Maybe you’ll find their tips helpful as well: https://www.pon.harvard.edu/daily/salary-negotiations/negotiate-salary-3-winning-strategies/

What’s your leverage? If you don’t have any, it doesn’t particularly matter. They’ll give a slightly below middling offer, and up it to the middle so you sign.

I always find it surprising when folks say it’s better to not give them a number first. Isn’t it better to be in control and give them the highest number you found in Paysa or levels? You can even add 10% to that number since of course the recruiter will start countering. Why let recruiters control the conversation?
