Apple trade-in online vs in-store rant

Went to an Apple store to trade-in my XS Max. The genious says in-store trade-in is only $550 and I should stick to shipping to get $600 instead. I have done it in the past and they have simply given the online promo price on a gift card that I can apply during pre-order. Wouldn’t shipping back and forth just use more resources vs them taking it in the store and shipping out in bulk? So dumb. Anyhoo who is ordering the new iPhone?! Edit: Confirmed with Apple. The idot was a “genious”. They usually make exception and give you online promo price if you tell them you intend to pre-order. I can also place order online, ship or pick-up. They can return/rebuy at store and apply my trade-in on the spot.
