In comparison to SWE, are PE/SRE treated with the same level of respect? Are they indistinguishable for internal moves SRE<->SWE? What about in the market?
It heavily depends on the company, but in some places SRE = Infrastructure Engineers. They don’t do any support at all. In this case, SRE are the elite
It’s where the leftover googlers work
Depends on the company. At Google for example SRE is a part of SWE. They are called SWE-SRE. (Many People are hired as SWE’s and SRE is a team match) and Development transfer is a project change. At, Google, SRE == SWE. In some cases I’d say even SRE > SWE, a borg/traffic/network SRE is much more competent than most regular SWE’s. At MS, it’s much less SWE work.
Yeah and some companies just prefer to use SWE on the platform team which usually ends up being a lot of Infrastructure and backend work.
Funny to see posts about citizens classes lol
Yes
No way they need to scale, monitoring, production issues while knowing how to code. You know at Google you can transfer from SRE to SWE if they were a second class citizen they wouldn't allow for that. Also the compensation is the same in most companies which says a lot.
