I have seen posts on blind and heard from friends that they have been in tech companies and basically done little to work. Dick around on their laptop, blind, Facebook, day trading etc. all day Mind you for actual software eng jobs that pay at companies whose names you would recognize I’m new to the field from university. Is this a real thing? Does anyone here do that? And do you get promoted?
It’s sometimes a question of feast or famine. Some months out of the year, I’m working 6-7 days/week for 1.5-2 months straight during heavy releases for a major product. Other months, I’m lucky if I hit 32 hours/week. This is the nature of the business for many and it evens out. Just don’t try to do your salary calculation versus hours you worked over the year - you will find corporate America is underpaying and overworking you most times.
The key is to look like you do a lot while doing very little
Yeah defintely. I’d say most office workers do very very little compared to the number of hours. You spend a lot of time waiting for others or trying to appear busy.
Yeah but you never get promoted you’re just a “too expensive to fire and recruit, ramp up” kinda deal
That’s a naive attitude. It’s easy to appear hard working and getting a lot done without working hard. You gotta remember that since most people probably only do 2 hours a day of work, you can easily stand out by being good at that 2 hours and socializing smartly.
