Atlassian vs. Datadog vs. Uber

Sep 28, 2019 25 Comments

I've been blessed to receive software engineering internship offers from all these places. I interned at Uber last summer. I'm a junior looking for this to be my full-time offer that I'd accept.

Disclaimer: I know Uber well, but I don't know enough about Atlassian or Datadog. Any insight would be appreciated.

Atlassian:

Pros
• Highest Intern & New Grad TC
• Best Work Culture

Cons
• Mountainview

Datadog:

Pros
• Best Learning Opportunity
• Hot IPO

Cons
• Lowest Intern TC (No Housing Stipend)
• Never Been to NYC (Could Be Pro?)

Uber:

Pros
• All 3 Meals
• Perks (Uber Credits, Rides & Eats Discount)
• Mission Bay Campus Coming
• Multiple Orgs (Potential Internal Movement)
• SF

Cons
• Lacks Stability (Mass Layoffs, Future Uncertain)
• Depressing / Bitter / Self-Serving Culture
• Bad Stock
• Not Profitable
• Poor Public Reputation

Which would you choose and why?

You haven't been blessed. You worked hard for it. Once you join whichever of these, please don't post on LinkedIn that you are 'humbled' to do so. It's not he right word. Just a preemptive advice.

nyc is expensive but you should be fine if you work in tech, especially Amazon or any other big 4

just don't plan on having kids or buying a house here

datadog, nyc is amazing if you’re young and no kids. also, datadog is actually a profitable company, you’ll get good experience there.

MV is a legitimate con, but NYC is a pro not a con lmao.

People who like the big city stuff SF provides will tell you MV is a con, but if that's not what you want then it's pretty great honestly.

Besides, there's an Atlassian office in SF as well. Even if you start in MTV you might be able to transfer there, or to Austin, or to Sydney, et al.

Datadog. Uber is shit-tier compared to datadog. Living in NYC is just cherry on top.

A few things - I think datadog has a better line of products than Uber, they have solid engineering culture, and their moat is larger and deeper than Uber.

I interviewed there a few months ago, and really liked most of the people I met. They also have some really cool products in the pipeline.

As a young dude, I’d strongly recommend living in NYC for a bit. No city will match up to it. Relocate to Bay Area after a few years.

You are a new engineer in making. Atlassian is a tooling genius for engineers. They build for engineers. Go work there and build a stronger foundation for yourself

Experience is way more important than TC for internship, choose based on the project/location. That additional 3k you make won't matter at all in the long run.

Fair enough. I'm more concerned with the TC for the new grad positions, assuming I do well this summer.

I voted datadog cuz your atlassian offer is for mtn view. From what I gather the sf office (that I work in) is more fun that mtn view. However if you don't like cold weather then go with atlassian

What is the interview process like for Datadog internships? Is there a Hackerrank / challenge and how many interviews ?
