Been in Austin for 5+ years and want to move to the triangle for a quality of life upgrade. S.O. and I both have fully remote jobs and want to start a family in 2023. Our priorities are: -Housing (3000 sq feet on .5 acre) for under $1M -Proximity to airport, 40 min drive or less -Good food and coffee; not so into bars/nightlife Thinking we could live in one of the farther suburbs but not sure where to start. Has anyone here made the move or have any advice? Anywhere to avoid? TC: $200k
May be dallas is a better option
Dallas better than Austin?
For the options which op mentioned. Yes
I live in cary… the new affordable cities are fuquay varina or further down 540… but an easy ride to the airport
Love Indian curry 🍛
Raleigh
Durham and private schools? Durham has the best food / coffee / culture but DPS is a dumpster fire. Otherwise Chapel Hill for the schools...
Raleigh - best schools and you can save 10k on house taxes per year when compare to Austin
Not true. You lose on zero state taxes benefit
Morrisville, Cary, Apex are consistently rated top in the US to raise a family. Mid to north Raleigh up to wake Forest is nice (if I was going to permanently settle down it would probably be wake forest had only great experience there) Wake county apparently has great public schools. Pretty much anything in the triangle is within 40 mins of rdu. Housing you should be fine it isn't like Austin here yet, I would actually be impressed if you spent 1m$
I’d be impressed with myself! Lol. Bought my S Austin home for $280k in Feb 2020 and now market value is high $400s, maybe low $500s so I’m hoping to transfer that equity into a new bigger nicer home in the $800s ideally. Wanting 1/2 acre is driving prices up and options down, though.
Yea I originally wanted .5+ acres bc I have a dog but settled on .25 within a few miles of downtown. You can easily get that size cheap but it's basically a sliding scale between acres and proximity to whichever downtown/amenities. What's the reason for the .5 acres for you
I would suggest the Eastwood Lake area in Chapel Hill if you really are willing to spend 700-800k. Superb schools, very walkable, green, large lots (1 acre-ish), good neighbors (mostly UNC-Duke folks). Another option is Chatham county’s northeastern quadrant. Also close to Chapel Hill/Cary/RTP, but much more rural. Huge lots, VERY green, decent but not great schools (although that seems to be changing with the influx of high earners), but you won’t be able to walk anywhere. Overall, though, if I could spend 800k on a house, I’d get something in Northern Virginia/Arlington.
Anywhere near FallsLake or Jordan Lake. It’s about 30-45 minutes to airport. It's a laid back and peaceful living. But they are two lane country roads. You might drive 15 minutes to grocery. It's a good start though. You will figure out where to move by the time your kid(s) grow up for school. RTP is not yet a concrete jungle.
Pinehurst is a nice city about an hour out. If you want land check out Mebane or Knightdale. Pittsboro has a lot of incoming development. Garner is usually “Del Valle-y” — but changing. Check out Raleigh South development — and then look at Dillon and North Hills (his other developments). Then go buy something nearby and flip it before density hits. Still deals to be had. Best coffee near here is gonna be Heirloom or Cup o Joe. Cary is a planned community and a Raleigh suburb made to attract IBMers from Armonk — feels like Fairfield Connecticut had a baby with a town in South Carolina. Known for safe, clean, good schools, expensive. Apex is Cary light. All other suburbs are playing catchup. Also consider checking out Chapel Hill and Durham in addition to Raleigh. Its like three separate cities with three separate vibes. Chapel Hill is very New England and Durham is wholey unique. Avoid: -Nuclear plant in New Hill -High crime areas of east Raleigh & Durham

Why doesn't OpenAI offshore and reduce expense by 80%
Does it have to be Raleigh or anywhere in NC works? Raleigh has become saturated and a concrete jungle
Oh man really? I was considering moving from WA to Morrisville
It’s a good place but greenery is gone; builders randomly building homes everywhere. Suggest anywhere within 60 miles of Raleigh instead.
