1 vs 5 Million - no lifestyle change
Hey guys, got an intern offer for Dell and BCG Digital ventures. BCG DV comp is way higher but its in Cali and there's heavy income tax and I would need to find housing myself. Dell is Austin and provides housing and income tax is almost none. Dell is cloud, BCG will vary based on requirements. What do you guys think? #tech #dell
BCG DV. It looks way better on the resume.
Could I ask why ?
What’s your role at BCG? I would say BCG for the brand but it also depends on what you’re trying to do post graduation.
Im going for PM more generally to be honest, just want to know which company will pay off long term
I was at PM at BCGDV. I don’t know much about Dell’s program but at DV you will get a bootcamp on all aspects of product management and have access to tons of incredible talent (it’s a supportive mentor/coach/learning culture). You’ll get a true glimpse of what it takes for 0-1 or at least have access to folks who can show you the ropes. Plus you get to work near the beach! Overall there are some biases on consulting PM but no offense Dell wouldn’t necessarily be better on your resume either. Now if you want to do cloud, then you won’t necessarily get to do that at DV. Happy to chat more – I was there for a few years, left to go back to industry.
BCG!
Seems you’re at dell, would like to know why you say BCG
Putting myself in your shoes, I'll take BCG without hesitation. A consulting firm exp on the resume opens more doors than a hardware company (who now wants to be seen as infrastructure as a service provider - this is what ISG is focusing on) I've seen consulting folks join dell’s leadership roles, but I rarely see dell folks go to consulting firms in management. Just my two cents.
BCG. Use the name on you’re resume to move to a good software / cloud company cause Dell is a dinosaur and won’t provide anywhere remotely close to market rate comp for a PM (like 50% of market at best from what I’ve seen / had)
The target is 75% of market, actually. Was told that by an ex-exec
I would say depends on your goals. BCG DV will really develop your customer and influence chops, but you won’t get exposure to anything really interesting from a technology perspective. Also, you will never reach beyond middle management at BCG because those on the consulting track ultimately get the top spots(see who runs the new BCG X). So it is a great place, but have a 3-5 year exit plan. Dell, you will work with actual tech that is implemented at scale, probably not cutting edge, but at least it is not a toy project like BCG tech projects. I agree though that Dell is not a huge name in tech anymore, but having moved from BCG to Apple the Amazon, I can tell you not everyone in tech knows BCG, but everyone knows Dell. Overall, if it was me, go BCG, stay 3 years, make loads of contacts, then get into the industry you actually want to be in.
I thought DV was consulting track as well? Slightly less pay than generalists but parallel structure and path to MDP https://www.levels.fyi/companies/bcg-digital-ventures/salaries/product-manager/levels/product-manager Seems like - PM = A/DS - SPM = C/SDS - LPM = PL/LDS - Product Director = Pr/AD And after that I assume the titles merge for P and MDP
Correct it maps to consulting track to a degree, and some go down expert as a VP. True Dell you might be exposed to deeper tech, but you will be involved in 0.2% of the whole thing, vs at DV you have direct exposure to the entire process end to end.

Bcg. Think long term. By your logic no one should be working in Bay Area.
Bcg
Thank you. Could you say why?
