How's Instacart?

Thinking of switching to Instacart. Looking to move to Toronto, and they seem to have a good Toronto presence. How's the WLB? Anyone know about the salary in Toronto? Hows the engineering culture? Is it stressful? Remote-work friendly? Etc, any insights from current employees would be appreciated :) @instacart #swe

Where are you based now?

Google nakedbard Jan 31

Remote friendly but the eng culture is meh. ML is very minimal if you are in that sector.

Not really hiring much at the moment. Very remote friendly, comp is much lower than US though

Meta elloworld OP Jan 31

You mean Canadian comp compared to US right? That’s normal I think What about the WLB?

Instacart vyits Jan 31

Still sucks. WLB is seriously team and role dependent, some can be pretty rough but generally things are okay lately with some bursts of struggle

Meta Mr. Pip Jan 31

Pretty good. I got the membership to save on delivery fees. Sometimes the prices are a bit higher than in store for example at Costco

Add your membership number if you haven't already, it helps!

Hey Instacart - which membership number to add and where?

Ex-FB SWE, currently Instacart here. WLB is much better, Eng culture sucks in comparison. Tooling is shit and there’s zero interest in improving it. While FB’s tooling is mostly homemade, it’s superior to anything I’ve seen either used or built by Instacart. The DevEx culture either doesn’t exist here or is lost by the time it gets to the product teams. Most of all I miss stacked diffs and Phabricator. Github PRs are unreviewable in comparison. They basically cripple even the fastest, most motivated and resilient code machine SWEs.

Meta elloworld OP Feb 1

Interesting! Thanks a lot for the perspective :) yeah honestly I’ve always loved Facebook’s internal tooling Do you mind if I ask your level, and how the interview process was? Any tips? (I’m interviewing for IC4, is it mostly leetcode?)

At FB I was E6. The process was pretty standard, not much different than FB’s. The general (non-eng) culture will feel familiar at first. No wonder considering Fidji (the CEO) came up at FB during the 2010’s. Otherwise current leadership seems less capable than FB’s. The mission (and also the KoolAid 😉) isn’t as exciting. Neither is the stock. Extremely remote friendly though, and that goes a long way.

It’s good but META stock is up dramatically. You won’t be able to find comparable comp here.

Can't imagine a reason why you would join.
