Need advice. I have an offer from FB for a PM role. It’s decent but not amazing (TC around 400k). I just found out my wife is pregnant with our third baby. I’m nervous about ramping up at a new job (year 1) and simultaneously either a) taking extended paternity, or b) working like crazy and skipping the paternity. I’d have no problem just taking it at MSFT. Not sure how this will be looked at at FB in terms of review. “Thanks for the job, by the way I’ll be gone 4 months this year”. I don’t want to stunt my career growth at FB right out of the gates. Also, the offer is about 10% more than I make now. Which isn’t crazy awesome. But a move to FB will probably lead to more money and opportunity in the longer term (year 3,4,5). What to do?
About 350 if I look at what’s actually vesting next year. If I look I use the last stock award then it’s more like 375. FB year 1 is high 3’s. Year-2 is probably low 4’s. By year 4 and 5 it’s high 4’s and low 5’s (stretch). At MSFT i’d need a promotion to hit that.
MSFT level and tc breakdown ?
Can you break down the TC offer from FB
It’s not a problem at all to take the 4 months. I’ve known many PMs/Eng leaders who do it in their first year of joining. Everyone will encourage you to use all your time
Taking paternity shortly after joining is pretty common at Facebook and the culture supports it with no judgment. Don’t worry about it. You can also split your paternity into two chunks if you like
Do you need to submit a proof or birth certificate for the leave?
that’s so great to hear. But does your review suffer at all? It must a little?
You review would suffer at MSFT too. Your BES would be reduced by 3 months. Also, you most probably would be considered someone who just met target in the review cycle.
I have two colleagues at MSFT that took baby time off last year and both suffered in their reviews. They both had reduced “impact” overall. Your rewards will be cut by however much time off you take.
You can take all the paternity in year one without issue, and you should
Also, remember that the extra comp can be used to simplify your life and remove chores that will free you up to spend quality time with family. This is an investment. For instance you can get a great nanny, cook, cleaner, and even other services to make sure that you can have a great impact. Sure you may spend a lot in the first year but it will have a great return
Decent but not amazing...
Lol ikr
Does your significant other works ??
No she doesn’t.
Take the job. FB gives 4 months of leave and you can split it if you want so you don’t miss too much work. Push a little on the offer comp too
