I joined MSFT and have a very poor fit with my manager. It’s been two months but I’ve lined up multiple interviews with other teams. I’m trying my best to leave ASAP before things degrade. I want learn about transfer policy at MSFT but can’t find info on hrweb. Is there any way my manager could block my transfer? I think he’s a bit racist and hostile towards me, and he’s about to find out about my other interviews since they just got scheduled. I want to know what options a manager with malice could have at his disposal.
The transfer policy does really come into play. Just get the other job and leave.
If you have zero results ( which you can't have as you haven't had a yearly performance review) or if you have had 'insufficient results' ticked in a connect or if you've had a email from your manager saying you aren't meeting expectations or if the managers you are talking to talks to your current boss and they say crappy things about you so the new manager doesn't want you.
I mean it’s only been a couple months. He doesn’t really know me. I have lots of other references from the past. I think if he contacted other managers it would just make him look bad, not me. So that’s good :)
Not if he has a prior relationship with them or is generally well respected.
Weird, how can transfer be blocked? On the orientation they mentioned that changing team is no big deal and is encouraged if you don’t like your current team. I know a team member who changed his team 4 times in his 1.5 year tenure. At times it may be recommended to stay with a particular team for 6 months just in case you don’t want to lose your signon but it is upto you. If other manager is ready to hire you you should not be blocked
It's meant to stop people with perf issues bouncing around the company, so if you have perf issues you can't move. Now whether that idea succeds or not is another question. I expect every company that does internal transfers to have something similar, even if its 'must be approved by hr'
Oh ok. Better to have the performance review positive and then jump. Are review 2 times a year?
MSFT, racist? Shocking! I do agree with the others above, Comey Memo every conversation you have with your manager. Email it to yourself from your personal email. You aren’t the first one to mention racism issues there, here on Blind.
