Had a first round interview at Microsoft and I completely - utterly bombed it. The kicker is, my interviewer was an absolute chad. He was super nice, and didn’t take the opportunity to make me feel like shit for not having the required experience or knowledge for the position on his team. He instead took some time to converse with me and help guide me on some things moving forward. That made me want to work there even more. Any tips for getting into Microsoft as a cybersecurity [something - anything]? TC:120
Tip? Don’t bomb on the interview for one..
I’ll try
Don’t do it.
Janitor okay?
If it pays the bills!
Getting through resume screen is already good. Means you can prep more and try again. What's your resume like? Friend is looking - not able to get through resume screen even with reference.
Resume is good I guess. I’ve gotten calls from big names and the like. I update it and get good feedback from different people.
Where did you work before? Yoe? School, major?
Try harder again. Don't give up
Do more leetcode. MSFT’s interview was piss easy
No LC for me unless I plan on swapping to SWE
Why do you think you bombed it? Do you mind sharing what type of questions were asked?
I bombed it because I didn’t have any relevant experience to what the hiring manager was looking for. I was essentially not a god fit due to lack of required experience. So I never got a followup or a callback.
Sounds like he gave you the advice already. Just take it to heart!
He definitely did offer some feedback. His team was packed to the brim with solid people. I would just like to get in and work my way up if possible.
Had an offer from Microsoft quite a while ago (didn't take it) and have some friends there. The best advice I have is that, at least a decade ago, there was no such thing as a "cooling off" period and many teams look for different things. Practice, find a new role you're interested in, and try again! Oh, and one other generic piece of advice... Remember that you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you. You should walk out of an interview with as much clarity as you can about whether you really want to join a particular team. When I got that advice as I was first starting out... It changed my whole mentality about interviewing. Helped me ask more interesting questions and be more reflective in my answers too. So... Maybe helpful to you, or maybe something you already know.
Keep trying! It can take awhile to get in, easiest if you have a former coworker pushing for you from inside who knows your value firsthand.
Lots to ask of former coworkers to keep pushing you if you keep bombing.
Persistence pays off. Who keeps bombing in this scenario @gzfjhf?
Microsoft is hiring? Sorry to hear that OP, keep your head up high, keep studying and you'll get an offer on your next try!
First - nice username Second: yea, they’re hiring but from what I’ve seen the roles I’m considering are rather niche and require a rare set of skills. Being a generalist sucks in those interviews since a little of a lot does me no good there.
What was so niche about it? I’m in security myself so I’m curious
