Is it really possible to get 200k doing a 4 month boot camp? What’s the point of going to university then? I keep seeing these boot camp people barely knowing how to code get 6 figures #amazon #google and google and Amazon hire them
It's absolutely possible, but it takes longer and needs more work experience. New grads can get +200k right out of school, but boot campers need to prove themselves at smaller companies first. But if both people can do the job, who cares how much debt they had to take on to get their skills? IMHO we don't need degrees for 95% of tech work. Technology moves too fast for universities to keep up. Certificate programs are easier to update and stay relevant.
I went FAANG out the gate.
Bootcampers are typically diversity hires. The hiring bar is much lower for them.
In my experience, swe jobs are gated by two factors - getting the interview and passing the interview. Passing the interview is nearly entirely about leetcode so that leaves the only difficulty in getting the interview. So a bootcamp grad that can get interviews through a referral or otherwise, can absolutely get high paying jobs as long as they can leetcode.
This.
Honestly I think we need to move away from requiring university degrees. As a hiring manager, the degree definitely doesn’t always mean you have the skills for the job. Given what university degrees cost these days, I think more companies should hire based on skill not degree.
Can a homeless become a multi billionaire? Yes. Can X that is not impossible but highly improbable? Yes. Realistically, no. I only met 2 bootcampers irl and both had degrees (1 had Math degree from UPenn and another had a Master's in the liberal arts). Neither started at 200k though the UPenn girl was close to it.
I’ve known many people who have gone through the boot camps. The ones that have succeeded (i.e. getting hired at a well known company with a good salary) also had university degrees. The boot camp was to supplement their degree (re: history major that learned to code). Those that did not have a Uni degree had a much harder time getting their foot in the door. One friend in this boat eventually got hired as an L3 maintenance tech at amazon and is on the path to L4 but it’s taken years.
I did! To be fair, I already had an engineering degree in a different discipline. I can’t say my outcome was average in my bootcamp, but I definitely wasn’t the only alumni to get FAANG.
That's the thing. Most successful 'bootcampers' generally have a degree. But that's probably not what OP wants to hear.
Prestige? University of Phoenix looks like shit
