Career in Machine learning AI

I’m a Java and c# dev the full stack etc >10 exp , am looking to shift gears to AI , deep learning etc , idea is to get to bleeding edge and get paid top dollar. Guys/gurls who’ve done that switch , what’s it like , will I be treated like a rookie , but ai itself hasn’t been here for long , hows the pay like in sf ,la , Seattle

You generally can’t just switch, it’s entirely different than standard software engineering and you need a significant amount of knowledge to get hired anywhere in an ML role. With that said, there’s plenty of roles doing engineering for ML systems, but that is not so exciting imo.

You can if you put in the effort to gain the knowledge, instead if leetcoding

Mr. MS poop over there phrases it perfectly. You can take a bunch of courses to build domain knowledge - you need to do that just to get into the SW role in ML. But being a SW eng in ML isn’t the same thing as being in an ML role as someone who has a masters/PhD degree in the field. It’s still an *important* role - someone has to ship those fancy networks on real HW - but it’s still a SW eng role, just a different domain.

What does it take to get a job in ML or AI without a PhD? What does one need to know? Tools? Algorithms? Practical experience?

All of the above. And luck 🙂. In the same way people recommend side projects for SW engineering, I would recommend side projects applying AI to different data points. Great way to both learn and show what you’ve got.

Internal transfer is the only standard way. There's no recipe otherwise
