Hi, all, I am a DS at an investment firm with PhD in Physics. But I only have 1 YOE. I mostly do one-man project involving ML and descent software engineering. I am planning to apply for DS at one of big tech companies, but I am not sure how much coding and leetcode I need to practice. Do people need to practice leetcode as intensively as SWE? One irrelevant information, but I am not interested in analytics. I would like to stay in ML. Thanks all for any feedback!
You probably make more money than FB can pay... Stay put. FB data science interview for me was pretty much a lot of SQL, no algorithms. My friend worked there and was paid below E3 with several YOE.
Thanks for your response. Is that true though? I make 125k + 20k bonus as initial salary. Blind tells me that the industry average is about 160k and much more for big tech companies although it includes all YOE. TC isn’t the only reason I want to go to tech, but I don’t want to get underpaid..
Oh that's pretty low... FB I think would be around there. I know DS at e.g. point72 is definitely over 200 though, if not 250. Aim high, you have a PhD! In finance that opens up doors more so than in tech.

Do people underestimate E6 role at meta?
1. Don't write off analytics teams, you're limiting your options. Facebook's SQL army is not a universal org structure. It's common for some ICs on analytics teams work on ML exclusively. 2. Someone who works on their own does not do decent software engineering, despite what you may think of your own code. 3. No, you don't need as much LC as SWE, but you do need LC medium. Yes, there's a chance you'll get a LC hard even as a DS these days, but it's small.
This is a great reply. You can’t even effectively build ML if you don’t care about the output (analytics). Also no way you can do descent SWE because part of that includes working with others code, having others work with your code, peer reviews, design sessions and more. L7rdtM have a great response.
