Considering leaving Amazon for Uber/Lyft. Thoughts?

I'm an SDE with 2.5 yoe in the Bay Area. Joined early 2018 and am looking to get to L5 in Q3/Q4. TC: 124k base and like 25 RSUs this year. I interviewed with both Uber and Lyft over the past couple months and have offers for both. Lyft is about 290k tc (170k base, rest rsus) and Uber is a bit lower 260k tc (150k base, rest rsus). Does it make sense to take one of these now and leave or wait for promo and switch internally? I'm at 190k with the stock price. How much of a bump would I get with a promo? Not a troll. If you have nothing constructive to say, then please don't say anything at all. No Visa issues. Edit: Manager uttered the term "performance improvement plan" to me in my most recent 1:1. I chose Lyft.

You won’t get bump to even close to that . Probably around 150-170 base for amazon and no stock refresher because you will be in range for sde2 band

With that base bump, doesn't it make sense to stay? Amazon stock is going places

Won’t matter because the stonks you get even if it goes up won’t catch up to the TC you will get

Levels at Uber / Lyft? Don’t forget to take into account the instability of ride share market, and stock direction of these companies.

That’s the risk you take for huge TC bump. Since OP has no visa issues, I would gladly take it.

T4/L4 at both. Equivalent of Amazon L5.

What was the offer when you joined amazon

Seems like a no brainer career wise. 100k pays for a lot of instability. And either company will be more exciting.

Lyft zzrigfk Jul 5, 2020

It's worth the risk, I'd ask for a signing bonus, Lyft shouldn't have a problem getting up to 25/30k signing

Thanks! Would you be able to speak to the culture at Lyft?

Hey can you share your interview experience with Lyft? Also how long did you prep for?

Amazon kungfoo OP Jul 5, 2020

A month. It was good. I would join a data team and the interview was very domain specific

Leave the most pandemic proof job for one where it is the most affected by a pandemic?

Big pay bump to either of those companies come with a huge risk of layoff anytime in the next 2 years. With only 2.5 YOE I would personally stay with the company that has the best combo of job security and n environment that will promote skill growth and upward mobility. At the end of the day you’re going to get more out of that scenario than a year with a pay bump before you get laid off.

I wouldn't bet on a promo at your current place only because it's not guaranteed. It's a big difference between Uber and Lyft financially so just based on that I would choose Lyft. It's also a big bump with either choice based on your current salary. Congrats on the offers!! Also can you negotiate Uber's? It owns a bigger market than Lyft in general.
