Hello everyone!. Recently had my second interview at Meta for an Operation Specialist II in the reality labs dept (prolly working for Horizon). This is a 1 year contract & hourly position (Through Randstad as staffing) paying $38.69. Obv no benefits just 20 days PTO. Meta sounds like it would be great on my resume but when I asked the manager about the possibility of converting to permanent in the future she mentioned I would need to demonstrate why I’m “indispensable” Feeling nervous about not having job security and getting treated differently because I’m a contract employee…. Anyone have any tips on working in a contract role at first??? Or experience working with their reality labs in the Metaverse ?? Most of the feedback I see online regarding Horizon is so bad so I wonder if another round of layoffs would affect heavily these teams. #contract #meta #metaverse #facebook #virtualreality
Please don’t take underpaying contract roles at sweatshops like Meta unless you have no other options.
Right?! $40 p/h sounds super cheap unless OP is very inexperienced.
Cheap for any entry level role at one of the biggest tech companies.
A lot of alums from my graduate program seem to start with contract work at Meta before converting to full employees. Of course, this was before the layoffs started happening. I've been trying to land a contract role at Meta, but I'm not sure how to stand out. I wouldn't feel too bad about it being temporary. I just need more experience while I wait for roles in my field to open. There's been so few positions open the past several months. The job board for my grad program used to be full of alums offering referrals but there's been nothing since August.
Check out this contract site that I found. If you go on the meta careers website and scroll all the way down you can find it too. https://meta.talentnet.community
Thanks for the link. I'll check it out and hope they have one of the temp positions I've seen some of my peers started with. Seriously it seems like every computational ling person I'd see on LinkedIn started at Facebook doing contract work.
Just take it. You never know how the future would turn out. You may very well get converted or internal jump. But still a good job
I would steer clear of this terrible place if you could help it. The name doesn’t impress recruiters
Just not what it used to be ??
Contractors are treated as second class, it will be hard to shake that perception even if converted. That said, take the interview for practice and resume bullet if you have no other offers.
It’s a relatively new team so I’d hope they’re not assholes
I work as contractor at Meta. If you don’t have any option definitely go for it. Plus FTE is of course better than contract offers. Also it depends on your team how they treat you and what kind of role you get. I feel very respected among people I work with. I’m moonlighting with a FTE job and try not to get involved too much in projects. I’m on contract so they don’t expect me to be as productive as FTE. I don’t want to leave my FTE role right now to getting converted from Contractor to FTE was never on my list. But I have seen it happening, you’ll have to go through full FTE process. But I wouldn’t put very high hopes there.
Thank you. May I know what do you work as on Meta?
How are you able to moonlight two jobs? Is one remote? Do they check on background check if you are still employed at another place? (Or we’re employed at two places after the fact)

FRL is Zuck’s baby…so should be fairly insulated. But it’s likely a helluva lot harder to convert to FTE for foreseeable future
