Imagine working tirelessly 50-60 hours a week to generate some additional hundreds of millions in revenue or in some case billions, just for most of it to be pocketed by executives, early investors, the founders, and the CEO, all of which own most of the stock in every company. The fact is almost none of you will ever get to that level unless you’re some exceptional early employee like Sundar Pichai. Most of you will get a pat on the back, and some extra bucks on your salary and stock refreshes, and call it a day. You can keep working like a wage cuck for 20-30 years if you want but some of us really are here to coast temporarily and do other things like creating businesses or fulfilling our artistic passions or growing money using financial assets or really any sort of life goals in the future, something which actually brings happiness and can also bring real life changing amounts of money. Stop criticizing the coasters.
Strongly agree. You know what big companies are all about? Scalability. You know what doesn’t scale: human effort (eventually you burn out, have to sleep, etc.). They’ll take the 80 or 90 hours a week you donate to them as long as you’re willing but try to automate the things you do ASAP.
Yes. Jeff Bezos is currently in a nice, relaxing sauna meditating about what other kinds of industries he should invest in to grow his 30 year old baby worth hundreds of billions. Meanwhile Mike Fisher, the engineer at Amazon distraught at the fact his work doesn’t match his PhD degree, is currently working overtime in the holidays to churn out a few extra code submissions for a higher performance rating.
The sad thing is people are so self-important they keep putting in those hours thinking 1) it matters or 2) it’s noticed and will be rewarded. Hard no on both counts.
Take FB for example. A company of 10k engineers + 30k others, just can't be full of go getters like it used to be when entire FB was 1k engineers (only 6 years ago). There just aren't enough such people to hire and not enough financial incentive any more. So we will (are) become a place for rest and vest, just like other big companies. That's just how it is. I don't have a moral problem with it.
> imagine working tirelessly for 50-60 hours sorry can’t do. exceeds my work capacity😂
Agreed. But who is critical of the coasters? I must have missed something. Anyone who works their ass off is either a workaholic, naive, or both.
For Microsoft-Amazon at least, tons of Amazonians criticize the rest and vest and lax attitude of Microsoft. What kind of fool wants to work more to lower their per hour pay and brag about working holidays and weekends?
Well, how about try to have a job you enjoy?
I agree, but I either work my ass off or coast depending on the job and situation. When I work long hours it’s not for the company, it’s for me. It’s because I’ve found a rewarding situation where the harder I work, the more interesting responsibilities I’m given, and I’m growing. Personally, I get meaning from growth and learning so I work hard when I have it and I love every minute. If I’m stagnant, then I coast with minimal hours
In my opinion if you coast, you're only cheating yourself even if you have the intention of starting your own business. Working for someone else is prime opportunity to study and learn, consider it free MBA. Go hard and learn as much as you can, you will find your reward in that company or else where.
All I have to contribute to this discussion is that my wife makes me use coasters. I long for the days when I was single where I’d leave half empty cups of coffee all around the place only to discover characterful growths in them a month later.
Stop whining and go find a job you love or start your own gig. Be your own boss if you think yourself is so awesome.
Preach. You owe nothing to a mega company other than doing your work in a manner that is reasonably satisfactory according to what’s asked of you. If they let you get away with minimal work and effort because of lack of monitoring or too much bureaucracy, that’s their fault. Milk it.
