Fired without warning, no severance. Top performer.
I am talking to cruise for a staff ML role. I have 7+ yoe after PhD. Levels.fyi says people with 5 yoe got staff positions at Cruise, which implies title inflation. It also seems sr staff would be stretch (it is the top IC level at the company and I am 64 at MS). So the only option for me seems like pushing the comp higher. What should I say as my expected salary? TC: 390k (with stock appreciation)
Only Cruise in the process?
TuSimple headhunter said they cannot compete with cruise in compensation and I am talking to argo ai as well
Also, sr staff is not the top level. LOL we need to fire your recruiter
No tips on comp? I also wonder how it compares to Argo.
You can push for staff with 7 yoe only if you did very good in your interview. Otherwise you can still beat your current TC with senior title if you negotiate well. Culture and wlb varies across teams. We have good teams and bad teams but there are enough bad ones to lower the overall rating. I personally happen to be in a good one
What are the good ones? What are the bad ones?
If your PhD is relevant you definitely have a shot at staff, otherwise you’re more likely to get downleveled to our high senior (L5).
What confuses me is that levels fyi shows a few entries for staff at Cruise, and their yoe are 3-5-5-7-12-15. Staff with 3 yoe?
Not true, typical staff level person has > 10 years of industry experience or equivalent. Again, it is tough to crack the interview, but if you do pay is good (base: 200-300k, bonus: 40%, rsu: 500k- 1million)
Yea I don’t think that’s common. Most staff candidates are extremely experienced in industry unless they were recruited for their PhD in something pertinent. We have many PhDs with 10 years experience that are senior.
All the staffs in my org are staff because they knew vp and his friends before joining. And the remaining will probably be hard pressed to survive at end of year. Also, high senior roles can make 500k in total comp easily, less expectations and probably best for most people.
For staff in an AI role, ask for 700k. You are expected to be hired roughly at the mid of the band, and 700k is roughly the mid in term of TC
Do you really want to cry after every day at work?
Is it that bad? This is a new team, so I thought it would be possible to establish some team culture
