Recently a recruiter from DE Shaw connected on LinkedIn regarding an opportunity based out of Hyderabad. Just wanted to know whether it makes sense to interview over there. How's the work culture and TC compared to FAANG? Also, is engineering considered a second class citizen over there? Any info related to DE Shaw will be really helpful. Current TC - 55L YOE - 3.25
Holy shit, 55L for just more than 3yoe DE Shaw is definitely gonna pay more than that for sure, but damn, that TC
Do you have a TC range in mind? Also what role is generally given at 3 YOE?
No D E Shaw will not. How do I know because D E Shaw ghosted after hearing the TC.
TC breakup, please? 🙌
35 + Bonus and stocks
Yes, engineering is considered second class citizen there. Work culture is like a bank as you can expect. I.e. dictated from NY. TC will be similar to or more than Uber. Doesn't make much sense to interview or go there IMHO. Outdated tech stack. No WLB. Not much interesting technical challenges.
Hmm, thanks buddy for these insights!
I would say only go, if TC is your only consideration
Nice handle BTW
Galouti kebab is love!!
When did you join Uber? An SWE1 being promoted to SWE2 won't have 35 as base
External hire.
I assume you must have joined recently as sde2 requires 3yoe+. Did you have competing offers to bag 55? Or is it general external offer for 3 yoe
Since DE Shaw offers no stock options, will they be able to atleast match the TC based on base and bonus?
If they really like you, they can pay. and when they pay, it will be in terms of guaranteed cash mostly (unlike stocks, which can go down). You can expect 35-40 Base + Bonus (I've received up to 20L, there is no upper limit) + Joining LTI (it's a one time sum paid in 4 equal installments, Ex - 16 lakhs over 4 years or so). Pros: 1. Great people, decent WLB, good policies. 2. Cash-rich firm, so lots of bonuses and incentives. 3. Very fast growth: for the first 3 promotions min. tenure is - 1.5, 2.5, 3 Cons: 1. Work depends on the team/group 2. Agenda and Priorities are driven by New York completely 3. No NYC transfer policy, min. travel to London/NYC 4. Management is old, people joined and never left :)
Other than good pay and a glamorous office, everything about de shaw is shit. It is not a tech company. Also, the remote work policy is shit. You have to work over remote desktop on nyc terminals. Imagine the latency of that. Pay is just insane though. We got 30k as wfh setup stipend.
Define Insane. How much do you think op can get ?
Also Uber gave 500$ as WFH stipend. Let's not include post Covid benefits.
For my three years that I worked there, I got 45%, 30%, 30% pay hike in respective years. And I was not even a top performer according to the annual appraisals. I was like a 3/4 rating. Ppl who are rated 4/4 get even a better pay.
On base or base + bonus, can you share the corresponding numbers
Nah. But you can ask for around 36 lpa base and LTI plus a 2 lac joining bonus.
