Do I need to mention a layoff during a hiring interview?

If a hiring manager asks why I left a previous job, do I have to mention that it was due to a layoff? Is there a way to address the question without mentioning the layoff?

You don’t have to mention it. Though honestly, it doesn’t matter. A lot of people get laid off and do mention it.

Why would you not mention it? It’s a perfectly legitimate reason.
