For those who live in SF or Seattle, do you leave ur car locked or unlocked when parking in the city? I heard it's better to have it unlocked so that thieves can enter your car without smashing your window unless you have a bullet proof car. Since cities now tolerate and don't prosecute car break ins, I don't see any point of locking my car. Tolerating thieves wondering inside your car is probably cheaper than spending hundreds of bucks replacing car windows.
I would rather a thief smash the window and get cut so badly they go to the hospital. That, or give them infinite time to hot-wire your car.
But it's also likely you'll also get cut by cleaning up the window fragments on your car seats. Also most modern cars have chip in ignition and is impossible to hot wire
When my window got smashed I used this thing called a vacuum, very handy
The only reason to not lock your car, is if your windows keep getting broken during a theft.
In Montreal it’s illegal to not lock your car if parked on the street. Got a ticket for that once.
Annoying AF, but a government that is truly cracking down on crime
If you leave it unlocked you'll find a homeless guy living inside
It's better than finding homeless guy living inside with broken windows
Yes, but it will take 6 months to legally evict. By that time, chip crumbs will cover the floorboards and fig newtons will be stuffed inside the seat belt receptacles. And never bring a black light inside either
Who on Blind has a bullet proof car?
It costs about $1000 to convert your windows to laminated glass, which is smash proof. If you car windows get smashed 3 times, then it breaks even. Then only concern is you won't be able to break the window yourself in case of car accident.
Can you do that in a bodyshop?
I don't live in shitholes
But you will visit it once in a while. You'll have to park your car there once you are there
Then I try to vacate my car as much as possible and keep it locked
It’s not a matter of locking the car or not, it’s what you leave inside. Keep the car completely cleaned out — I’ve heard of a window getting smashed out for a 12 pack of Diet Coke.
Even if you keep your car completely empty, theives will also smash your window to checkout your trunk
Leaving you car unlocked sounds like a great way for it to be vandalized or shit in. There are more use cases to worry about than theft.

I lock my car when I park in my own garage with the garage doors locked.
I do also.
