i feel like asians and indians are a bit in the gray area for this in partifular... because they are poc but have high tech presence is diversity and inclusion exclusively set to only target hire/lower the bar for what i assume would be hispanics and blacks only? if so how come? asians and indians often come from underprividge homes as well #recruiters #techcareer
At least in big Tech, I don't think Asians are generally considered as minorities. But they can be considered as minorities at the leadership level and there could be D & I practices targeting to increase Asian presence in leadership.
You were included for a while, that's why there are so many now. Now it's time to include others too rather than closing the door behind you.
So there was a converted effort in the tech space to hire more Asians/Indians? Is that why there are many of us. Got it. Must have been before my time since i never heard about it
Probably since in started in the 90s when the tech companies of the time (which were mostly electronics back then) lobbied George HW Bush to modify the original H1 visa and create the H1B to be able to hire talent from foreign countries as China and India started to open to globalization following the US efforts in the WTO.
It should include in Hollywood and media for sure.
And sports,,
Why do you assume the bar is lowered for underrepresented candidates? It’s more about increased outreach. You’re assuming someone is less qualified than you(assuming you’re not underrepresented) because of race. Your racism is showing.
Most companies literally say on their websites that they are affirmative action employers. Not sure if you know what that means but it generally goes beyond increased outreach
I have seen multiple times, at different companies, where recruiting pushed for an URM candidate over another more or equally qualified white or Asian candidate, because the company set a diversity goal
That last sentence makes me laugh. I live in appalachia and being white doesn't afford the mostly poor population around me much privilege.
I think he meant to say most of our background was like that.. typically you will hear people from a family of 5 who lived in 1 or sometimes 2 bedroom apartments back in India :)
Yea, and a lot of the families here live in single wide trailers.
The bar isn't lowered, they are just more strategic in who they reach out to for the role. For example, instead of doing career fairs at the same 5 schools every year, they include one at an HBCU too. They may also put a job ad on a website that is to be more likely viewed by more POC. It's only natural that the blacks/native Americans/Hispanics are priotized for diversity and inclusion because there are more of them here population wise and they are a big part of US history. The US brought a lot of land that was once owned by Mexico. Black Americans (descents of slaves) did not migrate here on their own free will. They have been here for a way longer than the Asians and Indians. Plus the immigration system is automatically set up to take the best of the best of foreigners. In addition to this, Asians and Indians already make up a large amount of the tech force. If you want more diversity, you would look for more Blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans.
I would 100% support it if it’s just increased outreach, heck I think we should do a lot more than that, companies should open up apprentice programs, set up 1:1 mentorship programs, run specialized classes, etc to close the diversity gap It’s when someone does actually get hired based on the color of their skin over a more qualified candidate that pisses me off, affirmative action at work. And yes I’ve seen it happen myself, when I was part of the interview loop
Not trying to discredit you, I am genuinely curious on how you found out about that. How do you know there wasn't another factor? Qualifications are only half of the battle, you have to mesh well with the team, personality, etc. Did the hiring manager tell you that person was hired because of the color of their skin?
Maybe for women. I’m a Chinese guy from America. I’m happy if there are extra soy sauce packets leftover in the break room.
Indian men already highly represented in tech, so no.
