What happens when most of your team is Indian?
I had about 5 years of experience in the manufacturing industry before doing my MS and grtting hired by FB as a E3. I think this is quite a downgrade to my actual abilities- I should be coming in at a E4. I tried to negotiate it but was told the policy is to bring all MS graduates as E3. I have another colleague who I worked with before (I was his intern manager in manufacturing) who applied recently and was given E4. I’m not envious of the higher level- I know why I took my path- but I can’t help but feel like I didn’t advocate for myself enough. Salary wise, it’s still a bump so I’m happy. But it makes me less enthused knowing I could have done better. It’s too late to negotiate now. Should I just be patient and prove my way to an appropriate level? TC: 200k
Do a good job and you can go from e3 to e4 within a year, if its obvious you are underlevelled.
That’s what I’ll focus on then.
Are you comparing your experience in the manufacturing industry with FAANG engineers?
I know it’s not like-to-like experience being a SWE in both industries but I can assure you I’ve developed enough skills over five years to put me at a more advanced level than a new grad SWE.
still make more than most amazon and microsoft employees after promo or even now so you're good.
I don't understand. Do you have an experience as SWE or not? If it is 5 YoE as SWE + MS degree then don't just accept it. There are people who get E5 offer with that YoE. I'd suggest you to join to another top tech company and try interviewing next year for E5 level.
The experience is combined between SWE (3) and DS (2) and then I did my MS. I think the re-interviewing may be a good idea for next year.
Yeah don't get mis levelled because of an incompetent recruiter who put you obto new graduate hiring. You were just unlucky to be biased on E3 level.
I understand what you are feeling. I am having the same issue. I want to come in as E4 but my recruiter told me that all MS graduates join as E3 and phD as E4. I would say keep interviewing for other companies.
At FB, it’s very easy to move from e3 to e4. If you like it then join
That’s what I was told. Hopefully I can make that happen within a year.
