I am 28 and just started my career in May as a software engineer. Starting salary is 76k. Do you think that’s where I should be at? I’m late in the field? Thanks In advance.
You reminded me of my career start. Spent too many years is school and didn't even get a PhD. By the time I had my first job I was 28. Everyone at my level and education was 3-4 years younger, and people of my age were 3-4 years more senior (~1-2 promos). But you know what? It doesn't really matter in the long term. In the next 10 years I grew really really fast and at 38 now I m in senior leadership position and have left many people in my peer group behind. In other words, the past doesn't matter much. Your whole career is ahead of you. What you do from here on will define your future.
Thank you for your input. It means a lot. I am pursuing Masters in Systems engineering. And actually am transferring to system engineer role in the next month or so. Your advice gives me hope. Thank you
If not for PhD, why did you spend so many years in school? What did you think make you stand out amongst your peers despite a late start?
Seems like a fair offer for Florida.
Thank you
If possible move to west coast.
Something to consider once I finish my masters. Thank you.
Also if possible take internships in west coast. Network .. network.. network..
Don’t look at in terms of age just look at in terms of experience ... In that case you’re doing pretty good keep it up
Thank you
I started at 28 in so cal at 65k. I was overjoyed! Now, 5 years later at G making 300k. Life is good!
That’s amazing. Congratulations on your achievement.
Good luck on the same trajectory!
I am in same boat as you around 10k less in Florida. Fingers crossed 🤞, find something better, Keep working hard.
Thank you
Entry level market is crazy tough right now, congrats on finding something. I’d work hard and learn as much as you can at your current company; don’t worry too much about salary now.
I am grateful to be where I’m at. Thank you for your advice.
You give me hope! I started at entry level in a slightly different role at 28 after being halfway up a ladder I didn’t want to be on (marketing). The role wasn’t that different but I also somehow moved to a company at the top of my new field (sales) so I got hit with a double down-level. I’m hoping that my transferable skills will help me crush it and rise quickly
I’m sure there are many of us out there start a little later. I believe if we work hard, we can be anywhere we want to be :)
