I got a 500k offer from a company. Half of it is equity. The company will be public in a few months, they say, but it is not guaranteed. Do you think the equity part of this TC is worthless?

Understand existing equity structure first. Then ask to speak with the people who are responsible for setting direction and issuing future equity (if possible). Non public is a liquidity issue.
