Which of the top tech companies is the best for a Machine Learning / AI researcher (recent PhD grad) Looking for roles that entails paper publications/patents etc. I have am expecting an offer from Amazon for an AS role. Current TC : 125 K
MSR, Brain, FAIR is where you want to be. Pick a job where the description explicitly states that papers and academic impact is needed.
Former Amazon AS here. It’s one of the best roles for machine learning folks. You’ll have talented colleagues and most of the problem statements are interesting. Although you check the problem statement with the HR. Even if you join and don’t find the work interesting, you can change teams internally very easily. Also, the teams I was in didn’t have sprints or on call for ML problems. So you could take your time researching and developing solutions. For META, go if you get FAIR. Because other roles can be engineering heave as well. Folks at Meta might be able to guide you better on this. For Google as well, a few ML roles are engineers heavy. I myself had an offer for software engineer- machine learning, and chose Amazon AS over it.
Thank you for this. I wonder why Amazon never gets as many votes on Blind. I know pretty smart folks work there too and the hiring bar from what I know is super high
Meta MLE is SWE role Google ML is also SWE role.
Amazon AS is very team dependent. I would definitely ask you to talk to the team's AS members before you join to gauge what their average day entails. Also, AS at Amazon is neither core research nor MLE. So for future job opportunities, you will either have a small pool of options (not a lot of companies offering AS-like option) or go towards MLE which will require you to have experience in engineering too.
I hear from my friends who are AS that they dont really train ML models but just SQL almost for months together
It can vary from team team tbh. I am an AS and I spent a lot of time in data analysis (so SQL) apart from model building. Since moving internally is easy, if you don't get the right vibe, you can move out of the team. If you are okay with Amazon culture and benefits, then welcome aboard.
