Got reached out by a recruiter on email and I thought it might be a good role, since it was within Product Analytics (was expecting it to lead to the PM route) But after speaking with the recruiter, it seems to be more of a glorified DA/BI role, renamed as “DS” to bait candidates in. And to make the experience even worse, the recruiter was clearly reading the role description from a script and it felt so weird. I doubt he knew anything about data science in general. He kept asking me if I had experience with Product Analytics, while I was trying to explain that I’m a Data Scientist and was expecting the role to be DS too. Dodged a bullet there, I guess. Anyone else felt this way? #tech #data #fb #analytics
Can I DM you for the experience? I have one coming up next my week, so want to understand areas covered in the call. Is experience in Product Analytics their only requirement?
They just want to go over your background. Nothing in particular.
Thanks
I’m at FB in a Product Analytics DS role now & I’d say it’s a pretty sweet deal. Lots of strategy, lots of statistics and no pipeline stuff.
Hi Friend, can I DM you for prep strategy? I have an interview lined up, but confused on areas covered in interview and where to start in terms of prep . I am looking for a high level overview from someone who has gone through the entire interview process.
I’d suggest using Data Science Jay’s prep material on YouTube & solving all of the 25-30 odd FB DS questions on Glassdoor!
Also, even if it’s a glorified da/bi role it will likely pay you a lot more and set you up for higher paying ops on the future.
It might. But I’d rather make $50k fewer, and do something I like. Not even sure what the exit opps would be like if one wants to move after 2, 3 or 4 years. And tbh, I wasn’t looking, just thought it wouldn’t hurt to see what’s out there.
In the us it’s a lot more than 50k difference. More like 100-300k. And with yearly refreshers I doubt any companies aside from faang tier will be able to compete. There is a lot of mobility within fb as well. But it sets you up for faang tier gigs in the future.
Many places are following suit to change their data analysts title to data scientists. If you want to be sure you are doing the true ds, you should apply to research scientist, core data scientist or ml engineer in Facebook
It’s very team-dependent. Some teams need DS with dee ML/stats knowledge and others are purely analytics.
Which roles are those? I have a comparatively stronger stats background than product. Although I can do both, but the former excites me more.
Generally, ranking teams. But it really depends. FB should probably split these into different roles because they require such different skillsets.
I was also solicited, but I think it’s a great opportunity
I don't care what it is as long as it pays the big bucks, I'd say there's even more need for this skill set than ML
The old bait and switch. They almost got me a couple of years ago.
