I’ve been at Amazon less than two years as an L6/SDE3. However, recently responded to a recruiter to interview at FB and received an offer for E5. It seems like a lateral or lower move in scope, despite TC and perks being better. Is it worth the switch? My goal is to grow into the L7/E6 level and beyond. And I mean really grow in expertise and experience not just pass the interview. Comp is important but not necessarily the most important. Which place would be better to grow and have leadership? Especially interested in those who have worked at both. Edit for obligatory TC post: FB 205/700/100, Amazon (original offer 2 yrs ago) 160/420/350
FB way better TC and perks than here at Amazon! No frugality LP over there! 😂
I assume your TC hits 400k at FB. I vote for FB unless you like your team and work at amazon.
Lateral move. Won't call it lower level.
I think e5 responsibilities and expectations are lower than l6, but FB gives more opportunity take on extra responsibility to “grow”.
Take amazon. The work at FB is terrible.
If you get to L7 you can get to fB as a E7 or at least high L6. Try interviewing a year later to see if you will get E6. You certainly won't get there in a year if you join as an e5
I am not sure if E5 is down level..its a stressful level with pretty large scope...Also I am not sure how do you know about your scope? Are you preallocated to a team and skipping bootcamp?
No I am not
I see...yeah then my advise would be to do your due diligence. E5 is not rest and vest, but if you are in an impactful project, you should be able to exceed. But WLB could potentially be much worse than Amazon. Perhaps ask negotiate for more TC if you are Amazn SDE3 already, IMO you could aim for 450K+ to 500K at FB as an E5 if you are a senior SDE3 at Amazon.
Amazon L6 === fb 5.5, so it's a lateral move
My perception is that the ratio of L6 SDEs to others at Amazon is less than E5 to others at FB. I agree it is lateral, just that with Amazon seeming to hire 10x SDE1 and SDE2 than SDE3, it almost by definition has more of a leadership component, which is necessary to demonstrate to get to the next level either promo or interview. How many E5s per E3/E4 at FB?
Facebook teams tend to not care about level ratio compared to Amazon, so it’s different in different teams. This makes level progression easier generally, since there’s no “ratio” to get right. Some teams have multiple E6+, some have none. Level is related to your capability, not necessarily your status as a TL
If the point is which company is going to get you to staff/principal, it’s Facebook. At Amazon, you’re limited by opportunities to show that kind of leadership, at FB there’s more opportunity than most people are willing to take. Worked at Amazon before and at this level so I know. Besides, life is more chill at FB.
Sigh. TC or GTFO? 😂
