Got an offer for FB Research DS that I didn't think I'd get (one interview went not great). Now have to decide whether to leave current Google DS role. Offer: IC5, 185K base + 15% bonus target, RSUs 350K/4 yrs Current: L4, 158K base + 15% bonus target, RSUs 104K vesting next yr 4 YoE. Both are locations outside main offices. Considerations: - FB role seems much more technical than what I do now (insights generation and A/B testing) - Level seems higher? (not sure about E5 vs IC5 or whether FB and G # are equal) - WLB now is insanely good so not expecting the same, but I won't take a role needing work on weekends or late every night - Several senior leadership leaving current org I support - Growth of RSUs - Relationship with SWEs/other roles Any other dimensions I'm missing?
What’s the difference between Research DS and DS roles at FB? Also, the RSUs seem low, is that the case for Research DS role or is it coz of your location? Your L4 RSUs also seem low, 104K includes per year vesting schedule or over 4 years?
IIUC, DS is more product analytics. Research DS is more stats, ML, and modeling. 104K is what's vesting in 2022 only - I'm trying to compare on the margin so ignoring unvested
Rsu for ds ic5 is not low. You might be thinking of swe. Ds get 60-70% roughly of swe
Congratulations on the offer. I am interviewing for the same role. Can i ping you?
Hi, can you share your interview experience? I have one coming up.
For research DS IC5, TC seems low. Should be around 350K minimum
Thanks for the data point. Is it mostly RSUs that seem low?
Yeah and some scope in base as well. And also ask for some joining bonus. Tell what you are leaving on the table at google. They do give joining bonus. I recently joined FB and got a good joining bonus once I explained my recruiters what I am leaving in terms of RSU’s at amazon.
Congrats op. Is the rds role at fb on the infra team? Agree with others, get that RSU up to 450-500. Tc for ic5 rds should be around low to mid 300s.
Yes it is. I will work on bumping that RSU up - thank you!
WLB on infra is not bad, you won't have to work weekends and nights unless you really want to get the highest performance level (greatly exceeds expectations). You're right that the rds role is more technical (worked with them in the past) but its not quite a research scientist. That role has a higher bar and is usually filled by PhDs. That said, as an RDS you do get to do a lot of applied ML work so if that interests you then you've got a great opportunity.
Do you have a masters?
Reason you got offer because of current role + company. I just realized you are at Google.
What does that mean? How do people who are not in my current role + company get an offer?
I got a notification with your header. When I saw that you are google then I realized that’s why you got offer even after bombing interviews. Because interviewers are most of the times biased and have an image of the candidates even before interviewing
Do you have PhD and from where please
I wouldnt leave
Higher level for sure, but new TC seems more like for product DS instead of research
Research DS is not research scientist role. Probably like a halfway mix between that and product DS?
Facebook titles their DS roles badly, it's just a more technical product DS role. Think of normal FB DS as more of a product analyst and research DS as every other company's DS, more stats and ML (but not "research scientist", which is a PhD level role almost entirely focused on developing state of the art ML)
