Facebook vs Cloudflare

I have got 2 offers one from Facebook that needs me to relocate to California and another offer from cloudflare and I have to move to Europe and work remote in Europe. Facebook offer is E5 (operation)TC: $300k/year Cloudflare offer (Remote in Europe) TC: around $180k/ year I am not sure if i should take the Cloudflare offer and move to Europe and work remotely with much better WLB or take the FB and deal with the wlb and get it on my resume for the future. Thanks #faang #Facebook #cloudflare #europe

Europe lowkey sucks. This is a no-brainer.

HuffPost sggR04 OP Jul 6, 2021

Have you had an experience working remote from Europe?

Box Day Man Jul 27, 2021

Why?

Salesforce No00 Jul 6, 2021

If you are from Europe or prioritize enjoying life, go there. If you want to prioritize Tc and future possible gains with okish lifestyle, California

HuffPost sggR04 OP Jul 6, 2021

I am a US citizen. I was looking to move to Europe all the time for a better wlb , better health insurance , free education and raising a family. But not sure if working for FB really worth it.

Salesforce No00 Jul 7, 2021

The post below and my reply there could give you more insight hopefully. BTW I'd suggest you to consider trying, you can always go back since you are a US citizen. Set a time budget and check what happens after vacation effects, cultural shock and so on

Join Fb. Its a no-brainer. Maintain that WLB at FB by having a good relationship with your manager.

The fact that you are undecided about this tells me you might not be as well informed about Europe as you might think. WLB in Europe is a myth and is only true for low paying jobs , meaning a Macdonald’s worker in Europe might have a better WLB than say a McDonald’s worker in the US. In addition WLB in Europe comes at a price , a steep price indeed in terms of TC. There is a reason why the smartest and brightest European engineers and/or other types of professionals are here in California working for the top US tech companies and not in Paris or london etc. You should only agree to move live and, work in Europe if you are a European citizen and want to be closer to your relatives . I.e if you you decide to make the conscious decision to sacrifice your US level TC and the California lifestyle and WLB offered by US Tech companies which is by far unmatched anywhere in the world. Now that been said cloudflare is also notorious for their low compensation schemes so if you really have decided to live in Europe I would recommend you get the FB offer and once you are there figure out if within the next few years you can have FB transfer you to one of their offices in Europe as an expat(very hard).Expat is the only way I would accept a role in Europe or anywhere in the world and that’s because it comes with a ton of perks that makes it worth the move.

I agree with everything you wrote, but California lifestyle. Remote Europe with 180k Tc can give you a lifestyle you can't even dream about in California. You can get better food, weather, recreational activities, places to go, diversity of people, lack of danger and the list go on, all spending a fraction of what you would pay in California. Rent a villa in Italy /Spain, one hour drive for a great city for fun, virtually no homeless, no risk of being shot in the street or your car to be broken into, amazing weather all year round, warm and transparent sea, beautiful mountains in few hours ride. To give some perspective, a senior eng salary in a hcol city in Italy/Spain is 40-60k Ok I'll stop there 😂 I lived several years in Southern and Northern Europe, 4 years in California

Those are great points! California/US is great as long as you keep working to keep the lifestyle. Even if you get the best lifestyle you still have to deal with lots of other issues that we all know.

“To give some perspective, a senior eng salary in a hcol city in Italy/Spain is 40-60k” lol I know . As a matter of fact my brother lives in Spain, And He is raising 2 kids with his wife on a meager salary of 30k Euros and the sucker is happy as fuck lol and to top it off his application for citizenship has just been approved and he is ready to swear allegiance to his majesty the Spanish monarch and, wait for it , there is even talk about renouncing his US citizenship lol But that been said I feel in general people have a romantic idea of Europe that doesn’t withstand close scrutiny and they tend to exaggerate what’s good and downplay what’s bad. And usually they’ll do the opposite for the United States. You are right at 180k the OP might have a decent lifestyle in Europe. Let’s assume the current exchange rate 180k USD = 150k Euros. Let’s assume OPs package is 50k in stocks that would leave him with 100k euros salary ( in line with cloudflare compensation for London) and an after tax revenue of approx 58k euros (assuming op chooses Italy) tbh I don’t know but maybe this is enough for a comfortable life style in the Italian riviera who knows after all my brother is swinging it by in Barcelona with half as much lol

Cloudflare is like joining an undeveloped third world country. FB is far better. I’ve been at both. Heavily regret joining CF and trying to leave immediately.

Europe generally have pretty high income tax and work life balance may not be better than FB

I am considering an offer from Cloudflare. Should I ditch it? How bad is the wlb? Also, why are there no RSU refreshers?

Cloudflare wJdC78 Jul 10, 2021

Agreed. There is NO WLB at Cloudflare. It’s just a mess.

Ditch it. Cloudflare is a shit company with horrible work life balance. Terrible leadership & unimpressive talent. Run far away.

Cloudflare (¬_¬'') Jul 11, 2021

WLB at Cloudflare? Lol
