Finding the first job for fresher is so damn tough
My friend is a recent comp-sci grad from USC and He is pretty intelligent(gpa: 3.9/4.0). He did an internship while he was in school but he is finding it so hard to get a full time. The expectations from freshers are so high right now. He has already given more than 20 telephonic interview and 4 onsite including one for google. He was recently interviewing for a company in Palo Alto, he went through following rounds of interviews: 1.Coding challenge on hacker rank 2.Phone screening with HR 3.Telephonic technical interview with software engineer 4.Day long onsite where he was asked to give a presentation to the team of interviewers followed by 1-1 interviews with 5 engineers. 5. Telephonic with VP of engineering who said that he is very impressed with him. 6. Another call with HR in Detroit 7. Telephonic call with software engineer. 8. Day long interviews with software engineers (2 pair coding sessions) in Detroit After the entire process he was told that he was not not selected because he was not using IntelliJ short cuts and they are really important to them. He was so depressed after reading the feedback and I feel bad for him too. More importantly I am shocked to know that interviews for freshers are far more tough than for experienced. Tc 180 yoe: 4

They seriously didn't offer him job because he wasn't using intellij short cuts? Sounds like a dipshit company.
Most of the people who got internship at good companies and converted it are lucky. For the rest It's quiet difficult to get full time after graduating. In addition to that if you are opt then only God can save you. Given that candidate has cs degree from good university and decent experience prior to it, he can get calls from many top companies. But It's pure luck and leetcode. Most of the smaller and medium companies are very reluctant about opt. Also if you are not in bay/Seattle area where most of the positions are located then not many companies are interested in flying you for on-site and paying relocation expenses if hired.I It's fact and we have to accept that. Many time even after reaching till vp level/last round they can reject without any feedback. Even if they provide, it doesn't make any sense. Some of the companies even ghosted after completing the process. Things to keep in mind- Leetcode, hrank, system design sites and other similar things is the life till you get the job. If you screw up the interview, learn the lesson and keep working. In case if you get rejected even after doing everything right(at least if you think so), forgot it as a bad dream. You really can not afford wasting time thinking about it and dealing with frustration. Many of my friends who are average or below average got the job easily while some other who are really good struggled a lot. You simply can not compare yourself with anyone else. (I'm not saying you are but just suggesting to avoid depression.)
Btw couple of months back I also did the process for the company you said. But I would consider myself lucky that they rejected me in 2-3 rounds.
4 onsites is tough? You need to go through that many onsites for offer even with years of experience
Mr Oath, issue was not with 4 rounds. It's with knowing intellij shortcuts.
He should consider himself lucky that he actually got feedbacks. Most of us are only left to scratching our heads.
