Is it better to have a dedicated GitHub account for work and keep my private GitHub separate? I have the option to use my existing personal account for work at my next job, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea.
I used my personal account before at previous companies. Nothing wrong with that. Plus it keeps your profile looking active with commits instead of being completely inactive
GitHub actually recommends having one account, though you can merge accounts. https://help.github.com/en/github/setting-up-and-managing-your-github-user-account/merging-multiple-user-accounts
Myself use personal and lot of folks on my teams does use personal, previously for GitHub and now Gitlab too
It's company policy for any person who uses our GitHub repos and etc third party services to create a separate account for each service for work. Wouldn't have it any other way, just sounds like bad OPSEC.
Use a separate account.
Y’all don’t have an enterprise instance?
They most probably do, I haven't started yet. They asked me in onboarding forms if I want to use my own personal GitHub handle to get invited to the company's GitHub.
Easier to cut ties with a separate account - for everyone's sake.
Yes! Just copy things if you have to. You don’t want to run into NDA/IP issues.
That's what my impression was too, coming from Intel. But my next gig is a pure SW company and several people there are using their own personal GitHubs instead a separate one for work. I found it odd, but I'm not sure if this is a trend in SW companies, and I was curious if there was any benefit to using personal account
Mmm, I suppose this is more common than I thought, based on some comments here. There’s probably ways to keep things organized as needed, whichever way you choose to go.
