There is an option in my company to link my org email with personal GitHub account. The benefit I’m seeing is to have an active GitHub profile. Though I have few questions: 1. Can I contribute to open source with my personal account? 2. Can I work on personal projects with my personal account? Will be using personal machine for this. 3. In future, will the deactivated account erase the activity on my personal account? TC: peanuts Thanks
Don’t. Keep your personal and work life as separate as possible.
We have some packages what went open source and I linked my org email to my personal github account. For 1 and 2, yes, I think your personal account still has your personal email address, just added org email as a second email. For 3, I think so, because currently if I don’t do org sso login, I cannot see my commits with org work. Other personal activities are not affected.
If you’re asking about open source projects made by your company, there should have guidelines but generally yes
Your GH account gets associated with the organization via SSO. When you leave that company, they just remove you from the org in GitHub Your contributions will still show on your profile grid afterwards but they will be under “private repositories”. I’ve used my personal GH for two companies so far and never had any issues.
Thank you everyone for the response!
Yes to all, though your company may have specifics on side hustles so check with a manager or HR.
+1 to above
Would advise to keep professional and work separate if possible
