Glossier Layoffs
Glossier a Series E company laid off 1/3rd of its employees. I heard it was mostly tech and wokes. Any insiders here with more info?
Saw this coming 6 months ago. A couple of recruiters reached out to me — I looked at their job postings and they had like 30 roles opened for Principal/Staff/Senior engineer. I also noticed they hired some high leveled folks from Amazon/MSFT — an immediate red flag because their business model ultimately doesn’t warrant spending that much into engineering. For anyone who doesn’t know, Glossier sells low priced makeup aimed at younger adults. When I saw them hiring 30-50 engineers at Principal/Senior (right after raising money) it was pretty obvious they would have a huge layoff shortly when that money dried up. You can even search their public engineering site, they put in a ton of work on leveling guidelines and a bunch of random shit — no idea why they would spend time on all that as makeup company, probably the very same question that was asked in the C suite. https://ladder.glossier.io Hope everyone makes it out safely and lands a new role.
In a non tech company, engineers are always second class citizens. Executives can’t understand the justification of paying an engineer 300-400k a year, it makes no sense to them. Sounds like that’s exactly what happened here, they will be outsourcing their engineering/projects and probably moving to hosted vs building/managing their own platform as per the article. I just checked their careers site… 0 jobs listed for engineering. Huge contrast to 6 months ago when they were hiring tons of Principal Engjneers. For the engjneers who survived, get out while you can on your own terms. 🙏
Always love executives who think outsourcing will work just as well as in-house developers. I can hire 3 terrible developers to produce terrible code rather than 1 dev to create good code.
