Goldman Sachs Engineering Manager 415k

With all the focus on FAANG here, wanted to start a thread on TC of VPs from Engineering at GS. TC: 415k YOE: 16 Role: Manager Please share your TC.

Microsoft Vbsm66 Jul 26, 2019

Isn't like a third of the company VPs?

Google burnItDown Jul 26, 2019

True. Inflated titles are super common amongst banks. Banks care a lot about appearances. Including mandatory suits even at places like Singapore or Mumbai where the humidity is off the roof and temperature is a sultry 35-38 degrees Celsius.

415k is Base? what is the split Base+Bonus+Stocks @ GS?

Goldman Sachs NBaI42 OP Jul 26, 2019

This is TC (base+bonus+stock). A little over half of TC is base. Most of the rest is cash bonus. Stock is a very small component.

Goldman Sachs fake engineer Jul 26, 2019

How many people report to you?

Jefferies cointoss2 Jul 26, 2019

Thanks for starting the thread. Wanted to ask, is there any difference in comp between strats attached to a desk in securities division versus SWE working on more infrastructure focused projects? Also is any of the comp deferred or unvested in the grant year?

Goldman Sachs fake engineer Jul 26, 2019

If you get equity comp, it's unfortunately deferred over 3 years. For senior people a large portion is equity. As a whole I don't think strats are necessarily paid more but I don't have evidence to back it up. What I am sure of is if I were somewhere else hiring people, I see securities desk strat experience as highly problematic due to the heavy use of Slang. It's obviously useless anywhere else, teaches a number of bad habits, and is rife with horrible architecture. A GS strat without experience elsewhere is either going to take a long time to get up to speed or increase technical debt or both. Once you get to the VP level the comp gets more variable and it matters more which team you're on. The discrepancy in pay can be very big across teams.

That's very informative thanks!

Is this the norm ? Or are you paid more than the norm , perhaps because you manage a more niche group - or because you are close to MD ? How many people do you manage ? My guess would have been normal median VP TC at GS would be around 300, or lesser. How is the WLB ?

Goldman Sachs NBaI42 OP Jul 27, 2019

Yes, the median TC for VPs is lower. But that's just because the VP level starts out quite junior (5 yrs YOE) and goes all the way to near-MD. WLB varies by team/org. It's good in my org.

Coldwell Banker PropGuy Jul 27, 2019

Ok makes sense. How far are you from MD ? I think it gets too political for making it to MD. How many people do you manage ?

Microsoft ediiii Jul 26, 2019

If I am a SDE 2 with 4 yoe, can I get a VP position?

Goldman Sachs fake engineer Jul 26, 2019

No, they don't hand out VP to people with under 5 yoe.

Microsoft ediiii Jul 27, 2019

So is 5yoe the minimum?

Microsoft 0120 Jul 26, 2019

How many % of the org makes it to MD? And is there an intermediate position between VP and MD? How about in other investment banks?

Goldman Sachs fake engineer Jul 26, 2019

There was a senior engineer title that got removed recently. Some other banks have executive director or SVP between VP and MD. In strats it's pretty tough to make MD, probably only 5%? Even lower in federation tech. Obviously there's very senior VPs who make tons of money but aren't MDs, you can usually tell by how many people report to them.

Goldman Sachs NBaI42 OP Jul 27, 2019

In tech (non strats), only about 1% of people are MDs.

Are you Strats or tech
