Google L4 offer - 259k - Mountain View

8 yrs experience base - 158k GSU - 308k bonus - standard 15% no sign-on bonus TC ~ 259k Already took the offer (as you can see), but I'm wondering how I did on negotiating. I had two other offers, but not from FANG or similar and not in the bay area. One was TC of 186k and the other was TC of 216k. My current job was paying less than half of this (I never brought up how much I was making and was also not in the bay area).

Did very well but could have asked for sign on

Airbnb notšŸŒ Oct 15, 2019

Average L4, mine was 255k with 30k sign on pre negotiating. Pat your self on the back for getting a pretty decent first Bay Area TC, considering thereā€™s no cliff and itā€™s monthly vest :)

Congrats on doubling income! Google is a data driven company so the only thing you can do is to provide competing offer. You can ask recruiter to give you some signing bonus.

Thanks! I actually negotiated away the 20k sign-on they added after the first round of negotiating and turned it into a 5k bump in my base (so I could have had 153k base and a 20k sign-on instead). More of a personal choice than a real gain probably.

Gj bc now your 401k match is higher and probably there are other base-related benefits

Google el sendero Oct 16, 2019

But there's an L4 salary band. Your base literally cannot exceed a certain value, until you get promoted.

Not true, saw it last week. He had competing offer from FB and Apple at 5 but G offered L4

Google jf8s3b Oct 16, 2019

That person will not get any raises until promo

Oracle sodnmx Oct 16, 2019

Bonus will usually be more than 15% right? Has anyone actually only gotten 15?

F5 Networks wait,what? Oct 16, 2019

I got 16.8% on my salary my first year. That was only being at google from may-year end.

Google hQBd56 OP Oct 16, 2019

The 15% is "guaranteed", but yes, it can be higher depending on performance. It is a bonus after all. I've heard 20% isn't crazy to expect, but that's not based on much data.

I started this year, first Bay Area role. Also L4 with 8YoE. Base: 153k GSU: 255k bonus: same I guess Sign-on: 20k Relo: 30k Congrats on your offer!

Google hQBd56 OP Oct 16, 2019

Congrats on yours!

Airbnb valhala Oct 16, 2019

You had way until 300, but still decent!

Tableau krxi15 Oct 16, 2019

I donā€™t get it. A ton of companies are paying way more than this for that much YOE. Why are you taking at least a 50k hit for Google namesake. Hereā€™s an example of a post right above yours: Check out this post! "FB E5 Comp (Compensation)" https://us.teamblind.com/s/KBkQxBTG

As I said, my TC more than doubled from where I was before and I wasn't planning on working for any of the FANG-like companies. I was planning on using a google offer as negotiating leverage at the companies I wanted to work for, but ended up finding a good team. My goal was to find a job I was interested in, not just the highest bidder.

Your tc is median for L4 go/paycomparison-dashboard

Google hQBd56 OP Oct 17, 2019

Thanks for sharing this!

AT&T MsdR32 Oct 16, 2019

I got the same TC, and couldn't get a sign on bonus of even 25k - had no competing offers, but I traded some equity for higher base - my base is 160k. I'm not sure if this was a good idea or not because base is so high for L4 that I might not get as big of raises.
