Google L4 vs Facebook E5

Google is offering me an L4 but an over 75% L5’s TC (according to https://www.teamblind.com/article/google-engineer---total-compensation-in-us---ultimate-post-jYcrij5X). Should I take it or attend several more rounds of L5 interview? I am not good at system design. If I did bad on system design, can I still get the L4 offer? I also have a FB offer with the similar compensation but it is E5. I slightly prefer G for better WLB, but is it worth to down level myself? Thanks for your comments!

Take Google L5, if you don’t get it go to FB and reapply to Google later when you have more system design experience.

What’s the incentive to switch from FB E5 to Google L5. Won’t it be better to get to E6 at FB or try to get hired as an L6 at Google?

Microsoft Zuzi Jun 13, 2018

I didn’t say reapply to Google L5, obviously L6 is better if he can get it. Depends on his timeline. Incentive of switching from FB to Google is WLB.

Don't get why people struggle with system design questions I just draw boxes and talk shit until interviewer has no more questions, 60% of the time works every time.

Google Google3 Jun 13, 2018

Lol this. On the spot interview system design is bullshit and a test of how good you are at bullshitting. Draw boxes, talk shit. Works every time 50% of the time.

I agree that I don’t have system experiences but still pass a bunch of system design interviews including Facebook’s by talking something I don’t really know. I don’t know whether G has harder system design questions, but maybe I should make some quick preparation and do the L5 interview. The worst case I can still have Fb’s offer.

OP, yoe? And you mind sharing your interview experience? How were the questions aa per leetcode level and how were the design questions?

Microsoft Fang+flag OP Jun 13, 2018

8 years. I did all leetcode questions that have Fb and G’s tag. At Fb, 2 questions are what I have met. G doesn’t ask any questions I met before. Both F and G ask about medium to hard questions. Usually the original question is medium and its follow-up or a new question can be hard. You should get a hire if you finish the original one and get a strong hire if crush the follow-up. I didn’t do system design at G that is required for L5 follow up interview. F’s system design is about some real system at Fb. I just meet the hiring bar in the system design interview and feel not easy. But it is because I don’t have much experience on large systems, I am only focusing on ML models in my current job.

Offer details?

Facebook sizz1e Jun 13, 2018

I was in exact same situation except 1 level lower. I took facebook e4 over Google e3. I think opportunities to grow at fb are higher. Might as well try for Google e5 and just take fb if you fail.

CenturyLink ml7hsg6 May 15, 2019

Hey! I’m currently in this situation. What has been your experience so far?

Facebook NotaTroll! Jun 13, 2018

What is your level? If you are not truly at E5 level, you won't perform well at FB and might get managed out.

Microsoft Fang+flag OP Jun 13, 2018

I am confident with E5

Microsoft CNTQ74 Jun 20, 2018

@notatroll, are you familiar with Microsoft levels? I am a new L62 and considering applying to a senior role. Should I target E5 at Facebook?

Interestingly enough I got T4 offer at Google and E5 offer from Facebook. I told the Google recruiter I want to push for T5 and they have scheduled 3 more interviews. The result won’t affect my T4 offer. So maybe you can approach the same way.

OP, mind sharing your breakdown please? If concerned, feel free to DM me. I assume you had base in 160-165k, signon in 50-60k and RSU around 700k? I am negotiating on RSU to match the highest range. Appreciate your inputs.

Did you accept the final offer?
