Google L5. How much to ask

I got verbal offer for cloud infra at L5 in Sunnyvale. Now recruiter is asking for my TC expectation. I really want to join Google but don't want to be lowballed. Currently L5 at Uber.

Recruiter also said 400K is definitely not possible, 350K is considered a very high offer for L5.

    Speaking from ignorance: what does the word "refresher" mean? I know it's company stock, but what specifically is a "refresher"?

      Yeap you got the jist. Yes, all the good tech companies start vesting your initial grants right away. Facebook and Google is setting a trend of vesting right away quarterly whereas other still have 1 year vest and after that its quarterly.

      I really like that idea; it keeps people motivated from day one. We used to have cash bonuses which were split into cash plus stock. This was a transparent money saving thing as few people last four years here.

    Maybe my information will make you happy. It’s absolutely possible. My offer in 2018 was 400k excluding bonus. Even some people get way more than 400k for L5. The tc only depends how google wants to hire you, which based on your interview performance and your skills like Machine Learning.

    See if you can get $350k with $50k sign on. Then let refreshers take over from there to cover the gap.

      How do they make you "prove it"? By showing them the offer letter? Isn't that a confidential doc? You shouldn't have to violate any agreements with the other company. If they can pony up you join, and if not, tell them to f off.

      I am not sure how many times walking away actually results in a better counter offer. On the contrary, revealing a confidential document isn't a good way to start your career. You have to be firm on what you are looking for: TC or an opportunity in particular.

    If Google doesnt pony up and let you ride it with 400 bills, it doesn’t want you badly enough, which is dumb because they need more engineers to work on their google cloud which is embarrassing compared to Amazon. Google has the highest number of underutilized engineers in the world and mostly hires to keep them away from the competition.
