Hi team, I'm in the early stage of negotiating an L6 SWE offer, and trying to reconcile some of the very high RSU figures reported here with the total comp figures. Various sources suggest typical L6 TC of about 450-550 after a few years. I guess e.g. 220 salary + 250 RSU + 20% bonus gets you in that range (assuming you get 250 RSU refresh each year with 4yr vesting). Figures taken from levels.fyi and this post: https://www.teamblind.com/article/google-engineer---total-compensation-in-us---ultimate-post-jYcrij5X On the other hand many posts here report hiring offers with *way* higher initial RSU offers (anywhere 500-1M over 4yrs). To be honest I would have imagined the initial grant to be about the same as refreshes... How do I square this? Is it really typical for the initial RSU grant to be much higher than the refreshes? If so, does TC actually go down after a few years, when refresh grants take over the initial RSU? Thanks and sorry for the newbie question, I'm coming from no-RSU world! Edit - per request a bit of personal info YOE PhD + 13y Current company: startup (too small to name) TC: Salary 225 + loads of preferred stock (early hire, but IPO if any isn't on a short-term horizon, so hard to tell how much those are worth...)
Initial grant compensates for the stock loss from the previous company.
220 base is the norm RSU’s will be anywhere from 650-1M (over 4 years) and will all depend on how well you do in the interviewing process
Why on earth do you want to leave "New" for Google ? Google is an old company, about 30 years old. Don't make hasty decisions.
Tell them you want this: 220k base, 1.2M/4yrs in RSUs. Congrats and welcome
$250k refresher is probably a bit optimistic, but $220k base salary and 800k-1.2m GSUs is the likely range for your Noogler stock grant. Push for the higher end, because you won't get a refresher in your first year.
You will if your director values you
Yeah, need to push for additional discretionary spending. It won't be the default refresher.
Yes, TC drops when refreshers take over for the initial RSU. You might get lucky with stock price increases.
Current company, TC, yoe please?
