Is "From the River to the Sea" So Wrong?
What's the expected dress code for the Google Mountain View office? I'm starting Monday and it's my first Bay Area job so I'm pretty ignorant of typical office trends around here. For reference I typically dress minimalism style (neutral colors, no accessories, etc). For those of you who are more visual... https://onpointfresh.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/minimalist-mens-fashion.png Thanks in advance!
Why don't you literally just email your point of contact at Google?
Because I have you guys and your constructive, valuable advice. <3
Then here it is. Wear the Halloween costume and keep it that way until someone suggests an alternative or you learn stop caring for it. Take a cue from MZ and SJ.
Wear clothes
Well that rules out half of my options.
Be fashionable and you’ll stand out, probably in a good way. Silicon Valley as a whole is very casual about dress code, though, unless you work in finance or business. Lots of engineers walk around in baggy cargo shorts, graphic tees, and dirty sandals, and then it seems like all of the older foreign engineers like to wear baggy dress shirts and slacks everyday with square toed dress shoes 🤮
I like this, thanks! Great advice!
I dont recommend sandals at all.
Most people wear clothes
Go buy an outfit at j crew. The culture is very laidback and casual but it’s always good to make a positive first impression.
This wouldn't necessarily make a good first impression
Wear a full tuxedo.
Yas.
Remember college? Exact same dress code.
This is the right answer
If you are a woman the rule of thumb is not to dress too too mini skirt etc. There was a lady in our department whos parfume smelled at the otherside of the floor. And she was exposing a bit too much. I wasnt really big fan of her. If you are a guy as long as your shoes are closed toe, and your clothes are tidy and clean and you are well groomed you are good to go. By the way i dont recommend shorts and flip flops are big no no. I think a simple well ironed shirt and pair of jeans looks just great. Being in good shape matters the most. I would not advice white sneakers as it ruins the look. As engineers we sometimes become less focused on the looks but i think its important just like having guests and feeling your home is nice and clean. You have to show the world you take good care of yourself so they can trust you more to care for the job and coworkers too. Congrats on your Google job. Thats funtastic.
White sneakers ruin the look? That's like staple of the minimalism fashion haha. Thanks for the well written response!
My team has some old costumes left over from some event and people sometimes wear them just for shits and giggles
Dress ugly. You'll fit.
Someone's salty
Nah they're right though; engineers dress like shit for the most part
It's very casual. T-shirt and shorts are good. Did you not catch a look while you were interviewing? Also is this software?
I did, just don't like making assumptions. Teams can differ. It's software and marketing.
Dress code can change across geographic location and roles but not across teams. Don't be a wimp.
