Hi I'm a new grad who recently got an offer from Google but the recruiter said the offer was conditional and depended on a successful completion of a background check. The problem is I had a misdemeanor charge against me back when I was 17 for selling 2 ounces of pot and unlawful possession in Texas. I was put in jail for 6 months as well. Should I tell my recruiter or HM? I'm worried my offer will get rescinded after working so hard 😭😢😨
Is that record sealed as a juvenile? I would disclose that if they are going to find it. If not, it seems more like holding back information which would be viewed in a worse way.
Unfortunately, only crimes committed under the age of 17 can be sealed in Texas and the crimes have to be very minor.😔
Can you share your story briefly on how you went from being in jail to getting a google offer? Sounds pretty dope!
Sure, when I was a freshman, my college threw me out because I failed a few classes and was unable to maintain a satisfactory performance. So I started selling pot to earn some side cash. It was also very easy since all I had to do was to grow some weed in my backyard and sell it to stressed out uni students. Somebody snitched on me and soon enough I was caught. At jail I met people who were far worse- rapists, murderers, meth dealers and even a paedophile. Every moment of my life there was really scary. I even got beat up by a crazy Latino gang. It was like a trigger point for me. I told myself that I'd never put myself in this situation again. Joined a small community college and worked my way up slowly and transfer to a decent state uni. Chose CS as my major cause it'll help me pay off my debt. I had support from my mum as well.
Inspiring. I wouldn't reject someone based on this.
Google doesn’t care about pot related charges
Jail for 6 months for a juvenile? Damn mate.
Yeah that's Texas for you 😖. You Aussies are lucky.
Marijuana is legal where Google is Headquarted.
I got lucky in the sense that most of the questions were in the medium/easy side with follow ups that I could solve. I interview in the third week of November and got my feedback on Friday. It took longer because of Thanksgiving.
Firstly, congrats on the offer! If google doesn’t work out you can easily pass interview at other companies. Secondly, the background check will uncover this history, so they’ll find out anyway. I wouldn’t bring it up unless they ask, and if they ask you should mention it to avoid lying when they find out anyway
Are you an underrepresented minority?
We need a recruiter to answer this one
Would mention it. Recruiter might even tell you that it is not a big deal
