Got fired from Amazon because country of citizenship

I am in Canada with a post-graduation work permit (I am allowed to work anywhere in any job in Canada). After graduation, I applied to a ton of jobs at Amazon. The application asks if I am a citizen of certain countries (Cuba, Iran, North Korea, or Syria). At first, I said yes, and all of my applications got rejected within the first two days. So then, I answered no to those questions for a couple of new applications. Guess what; I got an assessment, an interview, and an offer. I was still worried about my citizenship status. But it is on my work permit, and when I uploaded that and got approved, I thought I had the job. But after a day, I realized I don't have access to the source code. I had to submit a Deemed Export License. Then I was blocked out of almost everything, and after three weeks I was fired. They said it is because I falsified the hiring document. But they wouldn't even look at my resume if I had told them where I am from. I have looked up the Export License. It is for the US, but Amazon still needs to get it for their employees anywhere. The problem is Amazon doesn't bother to apply for it. I guess people from these countries can't hurt them on social media, so they don't bother. Earth's best employer kiss my a... Is there any legal way that I can force them to rehire me? I have gotten used to some level of racism from the US, but I didn't expect this in Canada! I know Microsoft, Apple, Google, Meta, and a bunch of other big techs do apply for it. I would appreciate it if anyone could help me. I need a job to be eligible for permanent residency applications. I declined a top grad school offer, and this is what I got! TC was: Salary: 110K CAD Sign on: 30k CAD RSU: 110k CAD (only 5% for the first year) TC now: 0 #tech #amazon #exportlicense #sde

So you admit to lying on your application and you’re mad you were let go for that?

Apple Mr. Hat 🎩 Sep 9, 2022

Amazon was justified in firing you because you falsified information. But it does suck to not even be considered for a job because of your citizenship. Forget about Amazon and apply to other companies that don’t have this restriction.

Amazon is the shit. Everyone knows they don’t apply for the export license if needed. Not sure if it legally counts as discrimination. Might be worth talking to a lawyer to get some compensation. Think of it as a high reward(settlement lump sum)/high risk(loss of lawyer fee) venture

Amazon Sr. SDE Sep 9, 2022

Don’t know how people even get into Google without comprehension skills these days. He lied and got fired. How is this discrimination again?

Btw what is up with these countries

Apple Mr. Hat 🎩 Sep 9, 2022

Axis of evil or something. Only applies to those governments.

They're in the list on countries for which there are sanctions/embargos. You can find out more on the OFAC website.

Being honest with the recruiter (if any) after you go into the interview process would have been better because they would have submitted an internal ticket that is worked on throughout the recruitment process. It’s almost always approved bc the recruiter is the one vouching for you and gathering the other listed/needed stakeholders to complete the process for a “qualified and exceptional candidate”. I’ve seen 6 ppl go through this process (always a “first for the recruiter”) and I haven’t seen it denied yet especially if you passed all the interviews. I’m sorry this was the end result but I would ask the recruiter you worked with if they know of any cooling periods or are you banned black listed.

The recruiter didn't ask me about it. When I got the offer and uploaded my work document, I thought they will know my country of citizenship. So, when that got approved, I saw no reason to raise concern. When I realized I don't have access to source code, I talked with my manager first. They were very nice about it and tried to help me a lot. But in the end compliance team didn't agree. https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/toronto-job-applicant-says-recruiter-told-him-amazon-isn-t-hiring-iranians-1.4780553 It is not just me. What bothers me is that Amazon is a huge company with all the resources that doesn't bother applying for it. I understand if a small company can't apply for one because they need a legal team but not a FAANG.

If it's possible for Amazon to obtain an export license, what's the point of automatocally disqualifying the candidates as the OP suggests?

Amazon apollofish Sep 9, 2022

When you apply, and also when they give you the offer, you are declaring a few things by signing your name. You essentially made false statements in hiring docs, and that is a problem even if it was not amazon.

What’s your country of birth?

Meta techbleed Sep 9, 2022

99% Iran. I've met many Iranians at FB and G, and nobody from the others

I'm from Syria and had to get an export license. All of the six travel ban countries need this.

Dude this is really unfortunate and I hope you this rule just does not create many obstacles in your life!

Amazon HermioneJG OP Sep 10, 2022

I had an offer from Coinbase first! I'm getting the felling that I am cursed!
