Or is this an app full of rich folks only? I don't feel stable at all. 1. Jobs are uncertain. You never know if you will have a job tomorrow. 2. Healthcare is sh** expensive. I avoid going to the doc or getting any procedures done. I don't know if I will be able to afford good healthcare for myself in my old age. 3. Parents in India are getting old and might need us anytime. I also like to send some money to them as a gesture. 4. Rents are crazy high. Mortgages are even higher. Even maintenance can be a major dent. I am sure these problems are not limited to me. How are so many people buying homes and raising kids? Just looking at the amount of things kids need (from strollers to summer camps) gives me goosebumps. HH TC: 300k (after cliff it will be 250k) + 150k
1 kid, single income, no house, no “2.5M NW”
TC? How much are the annual expenses of the kid?
$320k Rent is like $3.3k. I don’t track the expenses. Whatever our family medical plan costs, copay for doctor and specialist visits every so often, food, toys, etc. Not in daycare, wife watches her full-time.
Moved to LCOL, saved money, paid off debts, got promoted

Aye aye agree here. I always live in the smaller town next to the big town that's 30mins away. Still commutable but for HCOL area I can still shave off 20% on most expensive. For reference, Seattle homes were 800k-1.5mil, while Federal Way and further south is 500-600k. We could afford the latter.
What costs do you have where you feel stressed at 300k?
Rents and mortgages are increasing like crazy. Healthcare is super expensive. Jobs are unstable. In terms of cost: rent $4.5k medicines $1.5k family assistance $1k each car + gas $600 food $1k misc $800 yearly trip to India $5k We are still saving some money but not enough to buy home or have kids or upgrade our lifestyle. Thinking about the future gets us worried.
You need to cut family assistance completely and reduce your rent. I am sure Google has good insurance options. You may need to pick a better insurance option.
You make 400-450k and can't afford home/kids? I completely agree with 1-3. At 400k+ TC rent is a non issue even if it's 10k a month and you can find a decent place almost anywhere for 6k/month Buying is difficult in 3-4 areas of the country. Outside of those areas 1M is plenty for a good house.
You make 300k and can't afford home or kids is a joke. To afford home, you need to look outside of the prime locations. You may need to commute longer. To afford a kid, you need to find a girl first.
This dude really shouldn’t have a kid or gf. Live in a bubble
Those on the upper extreme, or gas lighters, are the largest group here. Us normals …worried about retirement, with multiple colleges to pay for are the norm. We just don’t realize it.
Agree with you, though, who do you think are the gas lighters? I cant fathom how anyone making greater than 250K is complaining like they are on food stamps!
At $330k you can easily afford a townhome in most parts of the bay. SFH will need either your spouse to work or you need to get to L6 at least and have a good down payment saved. It’s hard to buy a home when you are in 20s in bay. Most SFH buyers are typically in 30s with the exception of double income faang couples
I am with you OP. Planning to move to MCOL or LCOL soon once I hit cliff.
It’s tough.. slog for life
